“Clean Waves-Zero Waste” is basically a group of friends who came together with the same goal of wanting to see clean beaches in Puerto Peñasco while raising awareness among beach goers.
The project informally began in June with creation of a Whatsapp group where friends would arrange a time and place to meet and then pitch in by cleaning up areas of beach. Little by little, others came on board and local businesses have begun donating necessary material like bags, gloves, rakes, signs, etc.
“Clean Waves-Zero Waste” has also started a Facebook page, and an Instagram profile, for the purpose of promoting their clean-up campaign and to let people know where the next effort will take place. Members post images on their own social media profiles of all the waste they pick up, along with motivational quotes to inspire more people to join the campaign. These images display plastic bottles full of cigarette butts, hundreds of straws, and pounds of garbage left behind on the shorelines by tourists and locals alike.
As “Clean Waves-Zero Waste” grows, so do the areas they cover. The most recent areas to be cleaned were parts of the “Mirador” as well as the “Malecon”, which is where most garbage just gets tossed.
If you are interested in doing your part in making this a cleaner place, this group of friends and volunteers will gladly receive you with open arms.
Find them on Facebook: Clean Waves – Zero Waste Puerto Peñasco and find out time and location for upcoming clean-ups! Dates are usually announced only one or two days before.
