This is a week to put Puerto Peñasco on the map! On Tuesday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto visited the Natural World Heritage Site of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve just north of town and this weekend we welcome world championship boxing, with hometown WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada Romero.
Last evening, the malecón transformed into a boxing ring as “El Gallo” wrapped up training with a public sparring event. El Gallito’s world championship bout against Filipino Richie Mepranum will take place at the new Convention Center on Saturday, April 26th, with the likes of Julio César Chávez as commentator!
The action does not stop there, as this weekend also features the highly anticipated annual Rocky Point Triathlon at Las Palomas! On Saturday, tri-athletes will swim, bike, and run their way to a beachside fiesta in “the tri”, which also includes 5K and 10K jaunts. Plus, from boxing ring to skate park – the malecón will be the site for the 4th Annual ATMC Skate Fest, with support from the global non-profit organization Uncle Skate. Concerts round out the weekend with an after skate fest with ATMC at El Tapeo, and a featured weekend package concert of Jenny and the Mexicats at Las Palomas (Information and tickets: 108 1000.) Plus, head out to Cholla Bay to check on bathtub races starting from JJ’s Cantina! Get your co-ed team of 6 together and grab one of JJ’s tubs!

Rocky Point Triathlon at Las Palomas – How are those tides? Last year’s event started a bit late given extreme low tides, so we’re hoping our tri-amigos get out early this year so they can get their fiesta on in record time! Traffic note: Watch for some lanes closed to vehicles along the Sandy Beach road (from Las Palomas to the new coastal highway), allowing cyclists to make their way around the course.

May 3 Mermaid’s Arts Market at Plaza del Camarón – “The mermaids”, as the artists have come to be known, are starting to wind down their arts season in the plaza (1st and 3rd Saturdays, October through May), so be sure to stop by for local art, chocolate, photography, jewelry, “re-creation” wear, candles, ironwork, or a hanging planter made with recycled tires.
