Within the larger folds of Rotary International, service opportunities for younger people are made possible through groups such as Interact (for mid to high schoolers), as well as Rotaract (geared more toward university aged individuals). On May 12th – 13th, members of one such Interact group from Wickenburg, AZ made their way to Puerto Peñasco for a whirlwind service trip, plus of course time at the beach (which was actually a first for some). In coordination with the local Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, A.C.), Laura C…. of the Wickenburg Rotary Club, arranged first for an afternoon visit to a homework club run by AIM Peñasco, A.C. (Comprehensive Assistance for Children of Puerto Peñasco) at the Piedras Vivas Community Center in San Rafael, where the 8 Interact students readily joined into bilingual renditions of “Where is Thumbkin” along with arts & crafts and cotton candy. On Saturday, the group focused on recycling and upcycling as some helped sort sunglasses that had been donated to the local Rotary for an upcoming vision clinic, while others learned about some of the techniques in making art from recycled tires, presented by local artisan and Deputy Municipal Ecology Director Alma Yañez. Still in its toddler years, the local Rotary Club (officially begun in 2014) is exploring ways to begin Interact service opportunities right here in Puerto Peñasco, which made the visit even more timely in offering a chance to learn about the Wickenburg experience. Gracias, and come back soon!
