This weekend, the Peninsula de Cortes Golf Course at Mayan Palace is once again hosting the Uniting Nations Cup with teams of amateur golfers from Mexico and the US competing for team glory. Tournament action began today, Friday 5/18 and will continue through Sunday. Spectators are welcome!
Around town the weather is warming up, and people are taking to the beach and the malecon in the Old Port to enjoy the cooler sea breezes. Live music can be heard streaming out of spots along the malecon including from Thunder on the Beach Bar & Restaurant with the likes of Agua de Coco and Riband, as well as from BooBar, up at the Lighthouse, out at Wrecked, or even Elixir or Barra Vieja in the Mirador part of town. It’s perfect margarita sippin’ music weather!
This weekend in some ways is kind of the calm before the storm as next weekend, Memorial Day weekend in the US, is full of activities from stand-up comic Chris Porter at Las Palomas Convention Center on 5/25 and 5/26, to the Rocky Point Riders Beach Biker Fest 5/25 – 5/27, the 2012 Penasco Business Expo @ Shrimp Park 5/26 with info on local businesses – raffle prizes – food – fun and more, the final phase of the 57th Annual Fishing Derby in Cholla Bay, professional boxing @ El Chamizal, Thunder on the Beach Sand Drags on the 27th, and a Film Fest of shorts from students who participated in Penasco’s 1st Film Workshop (showing @ 7 p.m. at City Auditorium in front of City Hall), and on Sunday 5/27 we see there’s an NaturArte CEDO tour to explore the Morua Estuary.
Come June get ready for Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers Circus Mexicus XXI!!!
Roads: Other than ongoing work along Blvd. Fremont, and some work on medians on Blvd. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, roads are generally ok around town with the usual bumps, dips, sand, and some potholes when coming into town from Sonoyta. It’s so nice to have the Old Port paved and easy to get around, not to mention the road from Calle 13 out to Sandy Beach!
When driving down to Rocky Point, however, there are a couple notes to keep in mind. The overpass highway work in Gila Bend is scheduled to go through about early 2013 (sign says January), so be sure to watch for detours and turns as you go through that area. Between Gila Bend and Ajo there is some road work going on, filling up patches along the highway, that is supposedly going to run through about June 4th. Also, once you have crossed the border and heading through Sonoyta, watch for detour arrows (Desviacion) as there is some work on the bridge that leads into town just before you veer right toward Puerto Penasco. Safe driving amigos!!
