Where did March go? April and Semana Santa are right around the corner, so here we go with this Weekend’s Rundown. Sails. Athletes. Softball. Film. Farmers/Art Market and more!
The waters stretching from Playa Bonita down through Sandy Beach area should be alive with color and activity this weekend with a Sailfest on the calendar for 3/31 & 4/1. Scott Agan from Multihull Fleet 42 tells us even if you’re not pre-registered, but have a boat – or “something that floats” – to come by the ramp at the Playa Bonita RV Park on Saturday around 9 a.m. and see about joining in. He also remarked their upcoming events in Rocky Point are scheduled for 5 de mayo weekend (May 5-6) and their annual Rocky Point Challenge (along with Tucson catamaran sailing fleet) for Oct. 13th & 14th.
A bit further down the beach, in front of Las Palomas, the Rocky Point Triathlon will be sending people out into the water starting around 10ish (registration is the day before 3/30 at Las Palomas from 2 – 8 p.m. with the Red Rock Co. crew). After getting out of the water, competitors will hop on their bikes and wind their way along the paved road of Blvd. Costero (that stretches from Las Palomas over to the Family of God church by the traffic circle) and then back to Costa Diamante road by the main Sandy Beach entrance, up Paseo de la Luna (resort road that continues toward Cholla Bay) and then back to Las Palomas. Drivers and otros….watch out for cyclists so everyone stays safe! After jumping off their bikes, the triathletes will head out into the roaming hills of the Las Palomas golf course before making their way back to the Finish line and fiesta @ Las Palomas! Spectators can watch along the beach…maybe take in some sails over by Playa Bonita and then triathletes near Las Palomas….
Even further up the beach, over by the Reef, we see that Over the Line (OTL) Softball will be getting underway around 9 a.m., with proceeds of the event going to benefit the Santa Claus Club. Additional OTL dates lined up are June 9th, and October 20th.
If you’re not on the beach amongst sails, softball, and triathletes – head over to the Farmers Market/Art Show behind Don Julio’s (turn right about a block after Banorte on Blvd. Fremont). The market, from 10 – 4 p.m., has offered some beautiful wares, art, and information on local businesses, as well as fresh produce (usually coming in around 11ish), plus other surprises. Here’s a great article about the Market from our amigo Joe Houchin @ the Sonoran Resort Blog. 7th Successful Farmer’s Market Happens this Saturday, March 31st. Enjoy! Look for the Farmers Market and Art Expo on Facebook!
Down by the malecón, you may see some folk running around with cameras and film equipment from about 11 a.m. on Saturday until 11 a.m. on Sunday. These are participants from Peñasco’s 1st Film Workshop who will be putting together their final projects within 24 hours during their “First Short Film Rally of the Founders, Pioneers, and the Puerto Peñasco Malecón 2012” Congratulations to Nina, Socorro, participants and sponsors for helping make this workshop a success. We’ll be anxious to hear about any showings there may be. Suerte!
At the Pinacate, this weekend also marks the 6th Annual Padre Kino Pinacate Trek to include a camp-out on the 31st, hikes through the dunes, history talks and visit to the Schuk Toak Visitors Center. Registration is Saturday from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Biological Station of the Pinacate (Km 51) and then around noon City Historian Amaranto Celaya Celaya and Federico Godinez Leal from the Pinacate Reserve will provide explanations and details about hikes and for those planning to camp.
Also, on Saturday 3/31 @ 5 p.m. there will be a Wheelchair Basketball exhibition game at the Municipal Gym (on Blvd. Juarez next to Cobach highschool) with teams facing off from Nogales and Hermosillo.
Roads: The entrance to the Old Port has been finishing up some facelift work, and Circulación (“detour”) signs up this morning 3/28 still sent vehicles down by the docks – however, it looked like they were trying to get that opened up so just be alert when heading to the Old Port. The road toward Sandy Beach, just off Calle 13, is paved till about the El Establo horse rides with ongoing work on side streets, and varying mounds of sand and road materials, so again be careful and pardon the dust. Ambitious road projects can be found on side streets around various spots of town, plus watch for any sand drifts left from past winds. Again – be sure to watch for cyclists along the paved roads near the resorts from the traffic circle by Family of God down along Sandy Beach spots. Drive, ride, and sail safe this weekend amigos!
