Puerto Peñasco expects an ongoing increase in tourism this summer as visitors come to enjoy our beaches and city given our peaceful surroundings and respect provided to gusts. To increase tourist safety during their travels, the “Safety Corridor” program remains in effect between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco, coordinated by authorities in Arizona and Sonora in an effort to ensure highway travel to Puerto Peñasco is a safe and enjoyable trip.
At the beginning of July, as they periodically do, the U.S. Department of State updated information regarding global travel warnings for those going abroad, though did not include any modification for the city of Puerto Peñasco. It is important to highlight observations on travel to Sonora, and particularly to Puerto Peñasco, haven’t changed and the U.S. Department of State recognizes the northern part of Sonora has a lower crime rate than other parts of Mexico.
To get to Puerto Peñasco, it is recommended crossing at the Lukeville/Sonoyta border crossing and travel along Highway 8, preferably by day. Please note, the border crossing at Lukeville/Sonoyta is open daily from 6 am – midnight.
To stay up to date with new information and travel warnings that may help with your travel plans, it is recommended for American travelers sign up in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) as well as follow the U.S. Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
