A few of our wonderful supporters are challenging owners at each resort/living community to open their hearts and their pocketbooks to invest in a better future for kids in Puerto Peñasco.  Funds raised will enable us to provide hundreds of students with a nutritious meal each school day and the access to the technology and resources they need to stay on track and continue learning.

About Steps of Love

Since 2016 we have been partnering with the Mexican non-profit, AIM Peñasco to provide hundreds of young people in Puerto Peñasco with a path out of poverty through education. However, when this pandemic hit Peñasco in late March leaving so many struggling to survive, our organizations on both sides of the border temporarily shifted our focus from education to food. Over the next five months we were able to raise over $180,000 USD which our local team used to feed thousands in urgent need throughout the community.

Before COVID-19, education was their best chance to escape poverty. It still is.

Unfortunately, the last 6 months has been devastating for the families of the hundreds of students we support in the community. The pandemic has created two significant new barriers to their education and their futures: lack of access to technology and food insecurity. Therefore, our immediate focus is on ensuring that students do not go hungry and connecting them to the resources they need for remote learning. Tragically, if we cannot fund these additional resources many of them will be forced to drop out of school.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

Our Plan: Funds raised through this challenge will be used to purchase and convert four food trucks or similar vehicles into mobile homework clubs and technology labs. These mobile units will travel to four zones where large numbers of students do not have access to the resources they need for remote learning. These units will also be able to provide students in need with a meal each school day—sadly, for some this will be their only nutritious meal that day.

This plan requires a significant initial investment of funds to purchase and equip four vehicles that can bring students critical resources they need to stay in school. However, this is not a short-term investment. Long after this pandemic is behind us these units will enable us to more effectively bring critical resources and support to hundreds of students throughout the community.

The Challenge:

To raise the one-time funds needed to purchase and equip four mobile support units, some of our generous supporters are challenging each resort, their owners and friends to open their hearts and their pocketbooks to invest in a better future for kids in this community we all love. Through our website we will track and DISPLAY the response from each resort.  We are a qualified US Charity working with a qualified Mexican charity, so your contributions are tax deductible in the U.S.
