In addition to Puerto Peñasco’s Level 2 Sustainable Clean Beach Certification stretching from Playa Bonita to Sandy Beach, efforts are currently underway to obtain Blue Flag certification for a 75-meter-long stretch of El Mirador beach.
Luis César García González, local director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT), explained Blue Flag certification is an international award that represents a commitment to beach goers and the environment, a commitment that is achieved by meeting only the highest of standards in environmental information and education, water quality, environmental control, security, and services.
At the same time, the Clean Beach Committee is analyzing the possibility of obtaining Platinum Beach certification for Playa Hermosa.
The ZOFEMAT Coordinator recalled in January Puerto Peñasco received documentation once again accrediting it as having the only certified Sustainable Clean Beach in Sonora, extending 1791 meters from Playa Bonita Resort to Las Palomas. In looking toward Blue Flag certification, García González emphasized Puerto Peñasco seeks to continue to lead the way in terms of beach certification, as this is the first time such accreditation has even been considered in Sonora.
