Rotary International has more than 1.2 million members across the world, all of whom share a desire to help the local and global community. Launching from this spirit of service, Puerto Peñasco also has a long history of Rotary activities, which in the past included book drives and the establishing of libraries in area schools, among numerous other altruistic measures. Though the former club came to an end in recent years, the new Puerto Peñasco Mar de Cortez Rotary Club is pleased to announce their new accreditation, which was celebrated with the swearing in of Rotary members on June 13th.
The ceremony, which took place during a formal evening dinner at Mare Blu, began around 7:30 with the Naval honor guard presenting honors to the flag as all remained standing for the national anthem. Immediately thereafter, Rotary Mexico District 4100 Governor Jesús Godínez presented the constitutive letter to the Puerto Peñasco Mar de Cortez club and spoke to the value and trust the district has in the newly formed club, wishing it the best of success in all it sets out to do. He then proceeded with the swearing in and “pinning” of 21 Rotary members of the 30 registered, not all of whom were able to attend the ceremony.
Incoming President of the Puerto Peñasco Mar de Cortez Rotary Club Eduardo Vallejo detailed the true essence of Rotary, while stressing the tremendous values of each club member. City Secretary Oscar Villavicencio, present on behalf of Mayor Figueroa, similarly emphasized the club’s qualities and promised to do all within his power to ensure collaboration from the municipal administration.
The event took an emotional turn upon the presentation of special recognition to Leonel Limón Valenzuela, known among Rotarians as “Borrego”, for his 36 years as a Rotarian and founder of Puerto Peñasco’s first club.
The board of the recently installed Puerto Peñasco Mar de Cortez Rotary Club is as follows:
President – Eduardo Vallejo Vázquez
Vice-President – Enrique Rodríguez Ramírez
Secretary – Julio César Valenzuela
Treasurer – María Eugenia Reyna
Special guests present for the swearing in ceremony of the newly accredited Rotary Club included City Secretary Oscar Villavicencio Lübbert, present on behalf of Puerto Peñasco Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, Naval Captain C.G. DEM Ignacio Hermida Hernández there on behalf of Naval Commander Vice Admiral IM. P P.M. DEM Luis Felipe López, Rotary Mexico District 4100 Governor Jesús Godínez, Utah District 5420 Rotary Governor-elect Michael Wells, Rotary District 4100 Governor-elect Miguel Lardin Salle, Roberto Vázquez from the sponsor club of Caborca and assistant to the Rotary district governor, and DIF Director Samuel Ortega present on behalf of local DIF President Rafaela Félix de Figueroa.
The Puerto Peñasco Mar de Cortez Rotary Club meets Tuesdays, 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. at Don Julio’s restaurant on Blvd. Fremont. All Rotarians are welcome to attend.
