Far east of town in San Rafael, is a small church with a big heart to serve: Iglesia de El Buen Samaritano (Good Samaritan Church), 65th and one block north of Lazaro Cardenas Street.
For the past year and a half, Pastor Edgar Cabrera has built the church- literally one block at a time with alliances and other groups and organizations to assist with construction, a children’s classroom, kitchen, bathrooms, ceiling, air conditioning and a generator (the property does not yet have electricity).
It is the generosity of these people both monetarily and with volunteerism that has brought the church to its current status- though still not complete. There is still more to do- the bathrooms, tile the floors, complete the kitchen, another children’s classroom, a new sanctuary expansion, doors, windows, concrete, blocks, etc.
To help raise these necessary construction (and completion) funds, we are planning a great event for Saturday, November 23, 2013, from 11:00 – 5:00 at the Shrimp Plaza.
Locals restaurants: Don Julio’s, Mare Blu, El Pescador, Cocina de Ramon, Ramon’s Restaurant, and the Caribbean Parrot, have all graciously agreed to donate trays of food for the day’s festivities. Church members will also be preparing pozole, chili, empanadas, carne asada tacos, chalupas, tostados, tamales, rice pudding and more. Beverages include, sodas, water, coffee and champorado (hot cocoa).
Sounds tasty, huh? Well, you can purchase tickets at the event for just one dollar. Several items are only one ticket! Come eat, play games, get your face painted, learn about the church and the members and the Pastor and Pastora. See pictures of past projects and the future plans.
This year, in addition to our tasty food and games, we are hosting the crowning of the King or Queen of the tastiest salsa in Peñasco. Anyone can enter (no chefs please). Have a favorite salsa recipe? Sign up! The winner will be crowned and the first, second and third places will receive cash prizes! If you do not want to enter, come and cheer on your friends to win. The salsa tasting with the judges will begin about 2:00 with the announcement around 3:00.
