Mexico’s traditional Day of the Dead honors (celebrated Nov 1st and 2nd across the country) have a definite place within the community of Puerto Peñasco. In addition to families visiting cemeteries to adorn graves with flowers, food, relics from a loved ones’ past, as well as music, many schools and civic offices sponsor exhibitions and contests for Day of the Dead altars, as well as displays of painted nearly mythical Catrinas. Some of these displays begin as early as this coming week, here is a brief guide of ways to honor and celebrate Day of the Dead in Puerto Peñasco this year:
Oct 26th – Cobach High School altar display and contest 6 p.m. (on Blvd. Juarez across from Las Olas restaurant)
Oct 26th – Noche de Catrinas @ La Cantina at Sonoran Sky Resort
Nov 1st – Day of the Dead Altars 5:30 p.m. UTPP – Puerto Peñasco Technology University
Nov. 2nd – Altar contest along “Rodeo” Rd. – curios arts market 7 pm
Nov. 3rd – Catrina contest along “Rodeo” Rd. – curios arts market 8:30 p.m.
Nov 3rd – Third Annual Altars at Sea (boat loading area entry to Old Port) Procession through Old Port starting at 5 pm / Mass service near the docks 6 pm / Launching of altar boats at sea 7 pm
