THE RACE TO SAVE THE DACE HAS BEGUN!
CEDO friend Dennis Caldwell (US Fish & Wildlife) from Tucson, and his trusty assistant Marcus Kevin Knaus, from Germany and of Tucson, are toiling in the scorching July sun to make a new home for the endangered
long fin dace (Agosia chrysogaster). The last of these little desert fish from the Sonoita River – a tributary that once ambled across the US – Mexico border, and that has been all but dried up from ground-water use, live in our desert pupfish pond at the CEDO Field Station.
To ensure that the pups don’t eat the baby daces, we are creating a new home just for them! This pond and stream is part of our new vision for the CEDO campus as a community center that everyone loves to visit! Dennis is a pond professional and built our original pond along with a host of other ponds in Tucson.
