This Saturday, Oct. 19th, more than 500 people are expected to take part in an intense Coastal Clean-up effort as part of the 2019 International Coastal Cleaning Campaign, announced local Clean Beach Committee chair Marcia Ortega.
The main goal of this effort isn’t necessarily to pick up tons and tons of garbage, but rather to clean according to the characteristics of each coastal area while recording what type of garbage and/or waste is causing the most damage to our coasts.
Ortega of the Comité Playas Limpias detailed all are invited to take part in the clean-up effort from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m., by picking one of the following beach sites: Playa Hermosa, Playa Bonita, Sandy Beach, Cholla Bay, Mi Playa, Malecon area, Mirador, Las Conchas, “La Bajada” boat launching area at entrance to Old Port, the Morua estuary, Beach extension past Tessoro (end of Las Conchas).
Luis César García González of the Federal Martime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT) expressed appreciation this year’s clean-up also includes several from the local fishing sector, as well as divers to help with underwater clean-up.
