What first began as a hobby for dozens of horseback riders in the region has become an annual event, the Cabalgata Costera brings together more than 500 riders from municipalities in Sonora and Baja California, and is now readying for its Fifteenth Anniversary.
The ride, which will be held April 22nd – 23rd will include participants from riding clubs of Caborca, Mexicali, San Luis Rio Colorado, El Valle, Pitiquito, Oquitoa, Altar, Sonoyta, Riitos, and of course Puerto Peñasco, along with other communities from across Sonora and Baja California.
This year’s ride will depart from Ejido Sotelo located 40 kilometers outside of Puerto Peñasco in the direction of Golfo de Santa Clara, making its way to Rancho Los Pinos where riders will spend the night. On the second day, the trail will lead to Puerto Peñasco where riders will parade through the city’s main streets before ending on the malecón in the Old Port.
Celebrations for the ride’s XV Anniversary will include a Mexican Fiesta, complete with charrería (ranch) games including a greased pole, or “grab the greased pig,” plus a traditional rodeo with professional riders.
In planning for the Fifteenth Anniversary Ride, organizers are holding different fundraising events to help such as food sales and dances.
