SUP is the exciting, challenging, and balance testing sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding – and it’s now in Puerto Peñasco! With origins in Hawaii, in recent years SUP has attracted surf enthusiasts from beaches hugging far coasts, rivers, and lakes to popular hot spots in Mexico including Los Cabos and now Rocky Point. Whereas with surfing you need some waves, in all reality Stand Up Paddleboarding can be done on any body of water (though admittedly calm waters to begin with is a plus). Gliding atop the surface, paddle in hand, SUP combines aspects of surfing and, well, kayaking, into an adrenaline filled experience of nearly walking across the water.
Rocky Point SUP Rentals, run by local partners Marcia Ortega and Ramon Hernandez, can currently be found weekends (Sat. & Sun.) from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. in front of Playa Bonita hotel on Playa Hermosa, with accessible prices set at just $10 US for ½ an hour or $20 US for an hour. Though they plan to set up mostly along the stretch from Playa Hermosa to Sandy Beach, Marcia explains the calm waters in Cholla Bay (by JJ’s) is also a great spot for paddleboarding, particularly to practice the art of standing up (boards can be reserved to be delivered at different spots, with flexible times).
We recently caught up with the couple in front of Playa Bonita and they told us they were first drawn to SUP after trying it out in Los Cabos. As we walked up, we saw in front of Marcia and Ramon’s seaside stand five, gleaming, 12′ foam paddle boards (“beginners’ boards” as they say). Standing guard over the boards were the accompanying paddles, with their tips dug into the sandy shore. Leashes, along with life jackets in a variety of colors and sizes, rounded out the display of safety gear the two have put together as they launch their new venture.
Curiously, I had just returned from a trip to Chicago to see family where I first “learned” this Stand Up Paddleboard thing. Now, with Ramon showing me steps of how to get on the board – first by kneeling – and then eventually working my way to a standing position (knees slightly bent), I could hear my five year old niece’s kind reminder ringing in my ears from after my first lesson, “…if you fall down 7 (times), get up 8.” On Lake Michigan, I enjoyed my longest walk on water following a 4th attempt to stand on the board – on the Sea of Cortez that Saturday evening I lost count as I reveled in the lukewarm salty water that welcomed me each time my legs began to wobble.
Persistence and determination, not to mention good balance, sturdy legs, and upper body strength, are all useful elements to have within one’s SUP repertoire (don’t forget, you can also kneel). Marcia and Ramon tell us at the beginning, “SUP can be challenging for everyone and offers a “super complete” round of exercise.” Glad to hear we’re all in the same boat – or rather, board…with a paddle.

El arte de caminar sobre el agua por medio de SUP en Puerto Peñasco
Ya llegó SUP a Puerto Peñasco, o mejor dicho “Stand Up Paddleboard”, una mezcla entre el surf y el kayak, que ofrece la oportunidad de pasear sobre el agua, parado en una tabla de surf y con la ayuda de un remo. SUP, que tuvo sus orígenes en Hawaii, en los últimos años ha crecido y ahora atrae a entusiastas del deporte a las playas en cualquier parte del mundo, a los ríos, y lagos, y a lugares de moda en México, incluyendo a Los Cabos y a Puerto Peñasco. Mientras que para surfear se requiere de unas olas, la verdad es que se puede practicar SUP en cualquier superficie acuática (aunque para ser honesta, las aguas calmadas son ideales para los principiantes). Aparte de ofrecer la oportunidad de deslizarse encima del agua, el deporte de SUP es una experiencia llena de adrenalina con la sensación de caminar sobre el agua.

Nos encontramos con la pareja enfrente del Hotel Playa Bonita y nos comentaron que fueron atraídos al deporte de SUP por primera vez durante unas vacaciones en Los Cabos. Alli, en frente del puestecito playero que instalaron, vimos las cinco tablas, que miden 12 pies cada una (“para principiantes” nos dicen), junto con sus remos, cuerdas, y chalecos de salvavidas en una multitud de colores y tamaños, todo que forma parte del equipo que han adquirido para empezar con su nueva aventura empresarial.
Curiosamente, acababa yo de regresar de una visita con familia en Chicago donde “aprendí” el arte del SUP. Entonces, ahora, parada en la playa, mientras Ramón me indicaba las instrucciones para subirme a la tabla – primero con las rodillas – y eventualmente a pararme de pie (con las rodillas dobladas), todavía podía escuchar a mi sobrina de 5 años diciéndome tiernamente “al caerte 7 veces, te paras 8.”
Cuando estuve en el Lago de Michigan, disfrute mi “caminata” mas larga sobre el agua después de mi cuarto intento. Ahora, en el Mar de Cortés dicho sábado por la tarde perdí la cuenta al disfrutar del agua tibia que me abrazaba cada que mis piernas empezaban a bambolear.
La persistencia, la determinación, y ni se diga el buen balance, piernas fuertes y fuerza corporal son elementos útiles para practicar el SUP. Marcia y Ramón nos aseguraron que al principio “SUP es un reto para todos, pero ofrece un ejercicio super completo.” Me da gusto que todos empezamos igual – a gatear antes de caminar, o en este caso caminar sobre el agua.
