Strong rains measuring up to 50 mm are expected for the northern and northwestern part of Sonora this weekend, along with cold front #39, reports Information Chief of the State Civil Protection Unit (UEPC) Carlos Jesús Arias.
According to the National Meteorological Service, the short cold front should roll in on Friday afternoon, bringing with it rain and winds from the west and northwest with gusts of up to 60 kms.
“While this cold front is just barely reaching the coasts of Baja California, given its intensity it may also impact Sonora and, to a lesser extent, Chihuahua. This is why a weather alert has been issued, so as not to alarm people but rather to keep them informed,” indicated Arias during a recent press conference.
The weather alert has been issued particularly for the municipalities of San Luis Rio Colorado, Puerto Peñasco, Plutarco Elías Calles, Nogales, Imuris, Magdalena, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Cananea, Naco, Agua Prieta, Cucurpe y Bacoachi, Tubutama, Sáric, and lesser so for Hermosillo.
The cold front is expected to reach into the northwestern, north, northeastern and eastern parts of Sonora and the Gulf of California, with temperatures reaching down to as low as 32°F or below along the border region with Arizona and into the mountains. This is expected to last through about Wednesday.
The UEPC Chief called on all maritime vessels to remain alert within the Gulf of California, exercising caution due to the wind and waves. He also expressed the importance of caring for children and the elderly during the extreme drops in temperature.

HERMOSILLO, SONORA, FEBRERO 28 DE 2014.- Lluvias fuertes de hasta de 50 milímetros en la región noroeste y norte se esperan este fin de semana por la presencia del frente frío número 39, informó el Enlace y Jefe de Información de la Unidad Estatal de Protección Civil (UEPC), Carlos Jesús Arias.
De acuerdo al Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, el frente frío de corta duración ingresará este viernes por la tarde provocando precipitaciones con vientos del oeste y noroeste con rachas de hasta 60 kilómetros.
“Si bien este frente frío apenas se está aproximando a las costas de Baja California por la intensidad que trae puede también afectar Sonora y en menor medida a Chihuahua, es por eso que desde ayer se emitió una alerta meteorológica sin alarmar a la gente pero sí para que esté bien informada”, indicó el funcionario estatal en conferencia de prensa.
Por lo anterior la UEPC, emitió la alerta meteorológica con especial atención para los municipios como San Luis Río Colorado, Puerto Peñasco, Plutarco Elías Calles, Nogales, Imuris, Magdalena, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Cananea, Naco, Agua Prieta, Cucurpe y Bacoachi, Tubutama, Sáric y con menos probabilidades para Hermosillo.
Además se espera ambiente frío sobre las regiones noroeste, norte, noreste y oriente en la entidad y en el Golfo de California; se espera que podrían registrarse temperaturas de cero centígrados o menores en las regiones fronterizas con Arizona y zonas serranas del estado durante lunes, martes y miércoles.
Asimismo, recomendó a toda la navegación marítima del Golfo de California, extremar precauciones por viento y oleaje, además de proteger a los niños y adultos mayores de los cambios bruscos de temperatura.
