palooza-01-620x413 Weekend Rundown March 15th - 19thA quick glimpse at the Event Calendar from now at least through Memorial Day weekend shows that Rocky Point is the place to be this Spring!  Here’s a quick rundown of some of the activities on the docket for this weekend (that we know of).

Starting today, March 15th, the Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club is launching their first part of a 4 series Fishing Derby. This is their 57th tournament! If you’re not in the derby, insiders tell us the best time to snap a picture of the catches coming in will be from around 3 – 6 p.m. (derby 3/15 – 3/18). CBSC-57th-Derby-Flyer-150x150 Weekend Rundown March 15th - 19thSaturday will be additionally busy in Cholla Bay with the St. Patrick’s Day party at the Old Boys Social Club (I don’t think it’s all Old Boys though, right ladies?).  Also, don’t forget to stop by the Farmers/Art Market around mid-morning over behind Don Julio’s (just off Blvd. Fremont).  Hours for the market are from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and look for fresh produce rolling in around about 11ish. The Market is scheduled to be held every other Saturday through Memorial Day. Sami from RockyPoint360 will be there to help answer questions about upcoming events in town, plus our stand will have fresh organic coffee beans from Chiapas and delicious olives from the Santo Tomas region (coffee is from Mario’s going into the port and ask Sami about contact info for olives).

flyer_back2-620x401 Weekend Rundown March 15th - 19thIf you haven’t heard by now, music will be taking over the beaches of Rocky Point this weekend with DJ events and the much anticipated Sta. Patricia’s Peñasco Palooza.  For tonight and Friday, there are DJ parties lined up at popular spots around town including @ Baja Cantina in the Mirador area and over at Chango’s . Don’t forget parties along the Malecon in the Old Port @ BooBar, or over at Wrecked on the Reef, Evolucion Bar along Calle No Reeleccion, etc.  On Saturday, 3/17, for classic rock lovers and really just for anyone who likes some good tunes under the Sonoran sky, the 2nd Peñasco Palooza (dubbed Sta. Patricia’s for this March event) will light up the stage set up across from Chango’s in the Sandy Beach area. Music starts at 5 p.m. with Mariachi Duran, followed by the super popular local group Riband and then up and coming Sonoran rocker (also locally homegrown) Alan Munro.  Headlining the night is an All Star group of platinum recording artists that will be playing well-known hits from the Steve Miller Band, Aerosmith, Boston, Night Ranger, Kid Rock, Sammy Hagar, and so much more!  So, fly like an eagle ….to the sea (near Sonoran Sea to be exact) and catch the Spring Peñasco Palooza!

thunder-Jan-2012-2-620x413 Weekend Rundown March 15th - 19thWant more?  This weekend there’s a Thunder on the Beach sand drag event at the race course near the Reef on the way to Cholla Bay – gates open around 10 a.m. and races start about 1:30 p.m. (their event page says this is for both Sat. & Sun.)  Also, on Sunday, 3/18, there’s a DJ Beach Bash party starting at noon on the stage in front of Chango’s! Or if an ecotour is more your style the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO) in Las Conchas has their free nature talks on Saturday (English 2 p.m, Spanish 4 p.m.) and a Sunday journey into the Pinacate (pre-registration required).  If you have a chance, I’d also highly recommend a swing by the Visitors Center of the Pinacate just off the highway to Sonoyta (about 15 mins. out of Rocky Point).  Plus, there’s a Sunday dart tournament over at Pink Cadillac at 3 p.m.

B-Juarez Weekend Rundown March 15th - 19thDon’t forget – Monday (3/19) is the observed holiday for Benito Juarez’ birthday so it’s a 3-day weekend here in Mexico!!

Road news:  Looks like work is almost done on the exit road from the Old Port (woo hoo!), so be sure to watch for ongoing detours and one-way signs in that part of town. The road to Sandy Beach, just off Calle 13, is looking better and better each day with some newly paved streets – again, there are a few detours around this area so be sure to remain alert!  Another huge project is on Blvd. Freemont (on the way to Las Conchas), which is being broadened from 2 to 4 lanes but that’s still got quite a ways to go.  We’re happy to say a “new road” to Sandy Beach is open, as you come into town from the Coastal Highway, which also offers a great short-cut to this area. Upcoming events?  Check out our Event Calendar!!!  Happy beginning of Spring!!!
