This weekend rundown comes in just under the wire, and just in time to plan your next few days in Rocky Point!
Trucks, cars, bikes, atvs, and utvs will be racing across the desert this Saturday in the S.A.D.R. Sand and & Storm 300, with registration going on at The Reef today, Fri. 4/20 from 10 am to 5 pm and staging for races tomorrow 4/21 starting as early as 6:30 a.m. A quick look at the race course information shows high speed turns, big whoops, turn outs, deep sand, and hair pin turns. Drivers will sure be in for a ride! Awards at Wrecked on Sat. around 10 p.m.
For “golf” lovers, (well, kind of), JJ’s Cantina will be holding its 1 Club Open out in Cholla Bay on Saturday, starting at 7 a.m. We’re told you grab a club you don’t mind if it gets scuffed up (I’m planning on my 7), some tees, and some balls and plan to hit the low-tide “course” out on the beach, sand, stony landscape in front of JJ’s. I hear there may be costumes involved???? Later on Saturday, still over in Cholla Bay, the Old Boys’ Social Club will be holding its 26th Annual Bash and BBQ with live music, games, legendary pit bbq, beer, trash-can margaritas, and raffle tickets! Donations from Bash to go to Lion’s Club and the local DIF.
This weekend also marks the celebration of Earth Day (April 22nd), and CEDO is planning a full day of activities for its 1st Family Day/Earth Day celebration on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. – tide pooling, scavanger hunts, kayaking in the Morua Estuary, and Natural History talks! CEDO also has a Pinacate Adventure lined up for Sunday, EARTH DAY, which will leave CEDO at 8 a.m. Be sure to contact CEDO to sign up in advance!
In addition to celebrating the Earth, April 4/23 marks World Book Day! The City’s Office of Cultural and Civic Affairs, along with the Sonoran Cultural Institute, are planning 2 days of activities and cultural presentations around Plaza la Madre for Saturday evening and Sunday. On Saturday, presentations of dance, music, and of course books will take over Plaza la Madre (next to the baseball stadium when coming into town) from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. On Sunday, people plan to gather at Shrimp Plaza (near City Hall) around 3 p.m. for a “Book Parade” down to Plaza la Madre where cultural presentations will continue, including participation of the youth symphonic orchestra.
Following the loss of good friend, hard worker, husband, and father Jaime Bejarano, Sr., who passed away on Good Friday following a bout with lung cancer, there will be a 24 hr Cancer Relay for Life @ Playa Bonita RV Park starting on Saturday at noon. Part of the event also includes art vendors, the sale of remembrance luminarias, and other fundraising events. Funds will go to the family of Jaime Bejarano, Sr.
Tiburones baseball is on the road this weekend, but they’ll be back next Tuesday for a 3 day series against Ensenada. Games start around 7:30 p.m. at the Big Blue Tiburones stadium when coming into town. Check out local music around town and special this Saturday A Boy named Sioux will be at BooBar (get there early).
Roads: Old Port – check. Looking good! Paved road toward Sandy Beach leading off of Calle 13 – check. Looking good! Principal roadwork in town continues to be along Blvd. Freemont, just past Ave. Sinaloa on the way to Las Conchas, as they continue to expand that from 2 to 4 lanes. As always, watch for potholes, uneven dips in the road, sand, etc., and drive safe!
Upcoming events? Check out our Event Calendar! Coming next weekend: 2nd Celebration of the International Day of Dance (Peñasco del Sol Hotel), Funkalicious Volleyball @ Las Palomas, a Coastal Cabalgata (horse ride along with fiesta and dancing horses by the Chamizal), Farmers/Art Market behind Don Julio’s, CEDO San Jorge Bird Island trip, and Expo Niño on Sunday.
