Weekend Rundown 3/22- 3/25

Now that the surprise weather system from last weekend has rolled through, once again revealing that yes, indeed we do have the bluest skies overhead, here’s a quick look at some of the items lined up for this weekend. With this being the final weekend of ASU Spring Break we imagine some of the popular spots including pizza at Capone’s to fiesta at BooBar in the Port, to Wrecked at the Reef, Baja Cantina in the Mirador, and everywhere in between should have some fun stuff going on. Plus, Peñasco del Sol hotel has announced poolside DJ beach parties (Thurs – Sat) so that’s something to check out!

Peninsula-de-cortes-2-620x411 Weekend Rundown 3/22- 3/25 This weekend Peninsula de Cortes Golf Course will be holding its Mayan March Challenge, with practice rounds on Friday and Registration on Saturday beginning around 7:30 a.m.  If you didn’t get a chance to register, the public is invited to come out and watch the action (yes, golf action) from the club’s terrace. The Challenge is also collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Santa Claus Club at the end of the tourney, so bring a donation when you come.  Even if you’re not in the tournament, course director Andrew Gilchrist tells us that around 2ish on Saturday, 3/24, there will be a SNAG Golf Charity Chipping contest, $10 US for 3 shots with all proceeds going to charity.   Looking for more golf, don’t forget to check out March specials at the Las Palomas course here in town or out at breathtaking Laguna del Mar just North of the city (road to the coastal highway).

cbsc-horseshoes-620x312 Weekend Rundown 3/22- 3/25 In addition to golf balls, horseshoes will be flying over by Cholla Bay on Saturday at the 5th Annual Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club (CBSC) Horseshoe Tournament, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Red Cross. That action gets underway around 9 a.m. (sign-up) and the shoes start flying around 11. Check our Event Calendar for contact info. As organizers tell us, “If the shoe fits….throw it!”

monstertruck-620x413 Weekend Rundown 3/22- 3/25 Also on the calendar we see that Thunder on the Beach is planning on a Monster Truck event at the course just near the Reef. We hear the weather didn’t treat the Sand Drags so well last week, or any of the rest of us who simply don’t know what to do when we don’t see the sun for 2 or 3 days, so we’ll swing by on Saturday and see if the Monsters have made it.  *The radio announced registration begins at noon and the “show” around 4 p.m.

kino-150x150 Weekend Rundown 3/22- 3/25 In the evening, there will be a presentation of the documentary “Las Misiones de Padre Kino” (in Spanish) at the audio-visual room by the Fire Department on Blvd. Fremont. This is presented by the 1st Film Workshop as they near the end of their 7 week seminar. Entrada libre…y todo en español!

Remember, on Saturday CEDO has their free nature talks at 2 p.m. (English) and 4 p.m. (Spanish), and the weather is still perfect for a walk in the dunes near the Schuk Toak Visitors Center, or a visit to the amazing Maar craters and volcanic landscapes of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. With only partially cloudy skies and temps. back up in the 70s, we’re hoping this weekend will once again offer fantastic opportunities for getting out to explore the Sea of Cortez…from banana boats to cruises…or out to see seals and sea lions @ Bird Island.

Road news:  Old Port – cautious going in and out, but the main road that circles in front of Mercedes and the Friendly Dolphin is OPEN!! *After going that way this morning (3/22), we should add the road going into the Port (between Mario’s Coffee and Terranova) is being worked on, causing for a detour through the dock area.  Watch for Circulación signs (detour) and traffic tape.  After driving by the malecón, on our last drive through it looks like the road in front of the school (rounding the corner by La Viña del Mar) is not quite ready (maybe by this weekend it will be), so just follow the Circulacion signs to get back down by Thrifty, the Church, and then to Av. Alcantar that leads back out of the port. It’s coming along!   Still some roadwork over on the road to Sandy Beach just off of Calle 13 though it is paved up to atleast the SeaSide offices…and probably a bit more now. Off of Calle 13, another option is to turn right by El Sombrero and then down about 5 or 6 blocks before hanging a left, coming out near El Establo.  Blvd. Fremont 2 to 4 lanes…that’s going to take a while.  Be safe out there! Watch for mini sand-dunes on the road from last week’s wind storm.

Upcoming events?  Check out our Event Calendar!!!  Coming next weekend:  Las Palomas Triathlon!!!  VI Padre Kino Pinacate trek!  Farmer’s Market behind Don Julio’s! and a chance to catch a glimpse of beautiful sails just off the shore in front of Playa Bonita with the Fleet 42 SailFest! …then, April 1st Semana Santa begins….no joke!
