Warmer weather means more sting rays

The Tourism Auxiliary Unit in Puerto Peñasco has reported an over 100% uptick in sting ray incidents as warmer weather has set in. Yes, it’s time for the sting-ray shuffle for beach goers.

There were 35 reports of people stung by sting-rays in Puerto Peñasco during just the last weekend of April, luckily none severe.  Earlier this Spring, there had been 12-15 cases of stings reported each weekend.

Tourism Auxiliary Director Carlos Bravo Martinez detailed it’s common to see an increase in sting-rays along our shores from May through at least August. He reiterated beach goers should remain alert to the presence of sting-rays, noting one of the best tips is to shuffle one’s feet when heading into the water (rather than taking larger steps) as this will help startle the rays to move.
