The Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV) details their office is already busy with logistics, strategies, and promotional campaigns with goals set on at least matching 2022 tourism numbers. OCV Director Lizette Ibarra remarked there are high expectations to meet these goals in coordination with the Sonora Ministry of Tourism.
Ibarra reported Puerto Peñasco welcomed 2.1 million tourists in 2022, sustaining ongoing post Covid-19 recovery by reaching numbers similar to 2019 – or rather “pre-Covid”.
She highlighted an average of 45% occupancy rate at accommodation sites, with a reported 2,105,000 number of visitors. This represents an 8% increase in relation to the 1,948,946 tourists in 2021 and economic revenue of $136,816,000 USD (about 2.7 billion pesos).
Work now, stressed Ibarra, is focused on sustaining and improving these positive numbers. This goal focuses on promotion of upcoming events and holidays including the 2023 “Peñascazo Dunas Fest” this weekend, the January relaunch of the Puerto Peñasco-Tijuana Calafia Airlines flight, and the fast-approaching Spring Break, among others.
The OCV Director highlighted the positive behavior of the tourism market in 2022 motivates them to sustain increasing trends among travelers, particularly within national markets of Tijuana, Mexicali, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Hermosillo and others, without neglecting international markets.
