This Weekend’s Rundown sponsored by Giuseppi’s on Blvd. Fremont
It’s Semana Santa! This is definitely the busiest time around town, the beaches, and of course down in the malecón. Along with religious traditions celebrating Easter, Semana Santa and the following week “Semana de Pasqua” are filled with family, music, friends, and here in Sonora…banda! Schools are out for two weeks, though the busiest time is this weekend!
As we rundown this weekend, be sure to stay safe and enjoy the ambiance!
SEMANA SANTA!
Holy Friday – April 18th Viacrucis Stations of the Cross 10 a.m. This traditional event, which has taken place in the Old Port for nearly 32 years (with a few breaks in between) begins at the Malecón and will wind its way toward the stone backdrop of Whale Hill (near entrance to Old Port). More than 50 individuals traditionally take part in this dramatic retelling of the Stations of the Cross and crucifixion before Easter.
Music!
Pick a spot and you’ll find music everywhere you go…especially if you’re down around the malecón. Roads to the Old Port tend to be closed throughout this busy weekend, starting after about midday. Walk on down to the malecón and take in the sunset and an evening of bandas – the bandas started showing up last weekend in buses and vans, decked out in colorful suits and carrying instruments to and fro.
Party District – The DJ’s from Party District have got fiestas going this weekend, starting tonight 8 p.m. at Sr. Amigo’s in the Old Port. Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. at Wrecked
Baseball!
Tiburones are back in town for a three game series against the Vaqueros of Agua Prieta. Game nights April 18, 19, and 20 Games usually start around 7ish (Check at stadium when coming into town)
