In a joint effort between the local Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC), Tooele Valley Rotary Club of Utah, and José Velasco of the Midvale Rotary Club in Utah, members came together to carry out social work over the spring vacation, and principally at area schools.
Julio César Valenzuela, 2016-2017 President of the Peñasco Rotary Club, detailed thanks to the strong relationship with visiting Rotarians, projects were carried out in support of the Club Rotario Elementary School, the Héroe de Nacozari afternoon elementary session, as well as for the “Piñata factory” staffed by student graduates from CAM La Montaña. This work was in addition to the Tooele Valley Rotary Club’s central project of working on homes with the local organization “Families Helping Families.”
Two years after Utah Rotary District 5420 held their annual conference here in Puerto Peñasco, Tooele Valley returned to once again spruce up the Club Rotario school by helping to paint the façade as well as assist in construction of ramps in making the school more accessible to all. Additional work was done to weatherproof the roof and fix the ceiling in the classroom for students with special needs. At the Héroe de Nacozari school, José Velasco of the Midvale Rotary Club in Utah handed out 150 backpacks with school supplies that had been gathered and put together by incoming Rotary club presidents from District 5420. Visiting Rotary members also had the opportunity to visit the “piñata factory”, which provides productive activities for several students who have graduated from CAM La Montaña school for children with special needs. In addition, Tooele Valley Rotary Club members Rosemary and Dennis Hullinger presented the local club with donations of prescription sunglasses so they may be put to good use in the community.
The Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC) meets Wednesdays, 8 a.m. at Don Julio in the Old Port. For more information, find them on Facebook at: Club Rotario Mar de Peñasco
