This week’s Rundown brought to you by: The Club at Laguna del Mar
By Shandra Keesecker-Rivero
The Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau reports an ever increasing number of visitors graced the beaches of Puerto Peñasco this summer. Indeed, from late June through mid-August, visitors from across Mexico and the US spilled out onto city beaches, bounced across the waves, graced the air via parasail or an ultralight, took advantage of the new Hermosillo – Puerto Peñasco – Las Vegas flight, and explored the recently named World Heritage Site of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. It was quite a summer!
Here we are again, welcoming back amigos as the humidity of August subsides into Mexico’s patriotic month of September. We anticipate a busy Fall calendar of activities in Puerto Peñasco! Let’s dive into our first “post-summer” Rocky Point Weekend Rundown – and start planning for what’s to come in our seaside port! Welcome back! Around town, watch for roadwork along Calle 13 as well as out toward the new Convention Center.
Labor Day weekend
Golf! Laguna del Mar invites everyone to tee off this Labor Day at the inviting cost of $35 US but be sure to mention you saw this on RockyPoint 360! Reserve your tee-time at 383 0032 (Walk-ins limited)
Looking for more golf? Greens stretch out along Puerto Peñasco’s three golf-courses: Laguna del Mar, The Links at Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, and Peninsula de Cortés at Mayan Palace.
Art! The arts have continued to burst across Puerto Peñasco throughout the summer! Independent and International art films are now being shown every Tuesday evening at the cozy, new Puerto Viejo Tostadores Café in the Old Port (across from Thrifty…down from Blue Marlin) (Always with subtitles in Spanish / some films in English). With a new mural gracing the wall above the café, it seems like Puerto Viejo Café is an up and coming hip spot for coffee…and just down the street from another new spot YoFrut. Wednesday, Aug. 28th, 7 p.m., the Puerto Viejo Café will be hosting a photography exhibition of Hermosillo architect and photographer Aarón Gonzalez Martinez.
Aug. 28th & 29th: Wine Tasting! CAVAMACIEL Another welcome addition that popped up sometime early in the summer is the El Tapeo Wine Bar & Tapas spot at Laos Mar Hotel. Offering wines from Baja California almost exclusively, El Tapeo owner Laura Palacio hopes to offer ongoing wine tasting presentations with wineries from nearby Baja California Norte. Information: 638-380-5017
Mermaid’s Arts Market! Aug. 31! Sonoran Spa Lobby. We look forward to the return of numerous local artists and their artwork to go on display through the much anticipated Fall arts markets, though this Labor Day weekend you can get a taste of this artistry with a day at the Mermaid’s Market within the cool confines of the lobby at Sonoran Spa.
Auction by Casa Turquesa Aug. 31 – This eclectic consignment shop in town has joined with Plaza Misión del Mar for an evening auction of creative designs and fun. Two auction times: 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Plaza Misión del Mar (near the traffic circle to Las Conchas)
