If you speak to many old-timers in town, they can tell you in addition to the festive Independence Day fireworks of September 15th and the beginning of shrimp season, a change of temperature often graces Puerto Peñasco right around mid-September. This is not a promise, mind you, just a common experience. Under continuous sunny skies, temperatures in Puerto Peñasco only days before Independence Day are registering just under 100°F and with humidity at about 40%. Mornings and evenings offer refreshing respite and there’s a slight breeze coming in off the sea, so let’s head into the Rocky Point Weekend Rundown.
This weekend in Mexico is all about Independence Day festivities!
Tonight, Sept. 12th Ramón’s at Sonoran Sea will be the site for a Mexican Fiesta – Gran Velada Mexicana from 8 – 12 p.m. This fundraiser for Esperanza para los niños Children’s Home, organized by AJSonora, will include a night of mariachi and the astounding voice of Sonoran singer Mauricio Ruiz. Tickets are 200 pesos. VIVA!
Sept. 15th – Plan to head over to City Hall around 7ish to take in the community atmosphere of music, food, flags, dance, and fireworks!
Around 10:00 p.m. a group of “Independence Day heroes” such as Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Miguel Hidalgo, and Ignacio Allende, among others who will be setting out from the intersection of Calle 13 and Blvd. Benito Juarez and make their way to City Hall. There they’ll meet up with the mayor, joining him for the reenactment of the “Grito” and ringing of the Independence Day bell. VIVA! There will also be a “jail” set up in the parking lot of OOMAPAS (near TelCel) for the reenactment of freeing prisoners to join the famed Call for Mexico’s Independence, begun in 1810.
On Sept. 16th, Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta will present his first Mayoral Address.
