On May 16th there will be a second “Noche Bohemia” fundraising effort to restore the historic “Casa Juarez” located next to the Municipal Civil Auditorium. Organizers invite everyone to come out for an evening of music under the stars, 7 pm – 10 pm, cooperation 200 pesos (includes drink, snacks, and salad).
Casa Juarez in Puerto Peñasco is an exact replica of the home of Mexico’s early president Benito Juarez, original of which is located in Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca. The replica was built in Puerto Peñasco in 1972, and now a committee seeks it be named a Mexican Heritage Site.
The goal of the restoration committee, led by former-mayor Valente Cornejo López (1970-73), the Masonic Lodge “Año de Juárez 1972 #6”, the local Association of Architects, and Puerto Peñasco Chronicler and Historian Guillermo Munro Palacio, is to create a legal framework that can request federal resources for the restoration effort.
The restoration committee held its first fundraiser on Feb. 28th at Casa Juarez, located next to the Municipal Auditorium (across from City Hall), highlighting project goals while offering an evening of music and art on the inviting patio. The upcoming event on May 16th (rescheduled from May 9th) will help further the group’s goal to restore the home.
