With the objective of providing information as to the possible impact on municipalities across Sonora during hurricane season, as well as progress on contingency plans, authorities from various municipalities accompanied by state and military officials recently held a regional meeting in Puerto Peñasco regarding preparation for the tropical storm season.
The event, presided over by State Civil Protection Coordinator Ernesto Portugal García, highlighted risks within the region with the possibility of 19 tropical storms that may impact Sonora this year during the months of June and July. In addition, information was presented as to the network of areas that may serve as shelters, along with preventive and emergency steps.
During the regional gathering, which included participation of mayors from Caborca, Naco, and Trincheras as well as representatives from the municipalities of Sonoyta, Nogales, Agua Prieta, San Luis Río Colorado, Cananea, and Puerto Peñasco, all agreed on the need for more support at the state level in order to confront challenges of the storm season.
During the meeting, Rear-Admiral Luis Manuel Pérez Zurita, commander of the Navy sector in Puerto Peñasco, presented the 2015 Marine Plan while Coronel Raúl Castro Aparicio, from Military Quarter 45 in Nogales, Sonora, presented the PLAN DNIII, to support communities during meteorological emergencies.
Others present at the regional gathering included staff from the Fire Department, Federal Police, PGR, along with paramedic students from the universities of UTPP and UTH.
