Puerto Peñasco shrimp may again be marketed in the U.S. given, for a 2nd consecutive year, the 2023 U.S. Federal Registry published a positive report for Mexico as a result of joint efforts of the Mexican government and fishing sector.
Mexico’s certification by the U.S. for a second year comes after the U.S. suspended Mexico’s shrimp export at the end of April, 2021, noting Mexico had not met sea turtle protection standards within shrimping practices.
Following intensive campaigns launched by the Mexican government focused on preserving sea turtles, along with training and awareness campaigns with fishermen, Mexico regained U.S. certification in Oct. 2021.
A press release reiterated Mexico’s commitment for the care and protection of sea turtles while carrying out sustainable and responsible shrimping activity. It is worth noting this certification directly benefits over 107,000 fishermen and women, with over 430,000 family members dependent on the shrimping industry in the country.
