Fish Monument soon to go up in new location
Within coming weeks, the 6 x 2.5 meter sailfish monument once located at the intersection of Calle 13 and Blvd. Juarez is set to go up in its new location near the entrance to the Old Port. This comes nearly seven months after the monument was removed, along with additional work to modify its base plus renovation and maintenance work on the Fish Monument itself.
Municipal Public Works Director José Luis Montijo Torres made assurances the new location will not cause any traffic altercations and is a more representative location for Puerto Peñasco’s fishermen as it will be near the entrance to the panga dock in the Old Port.

Plans for new landfill on hold till 2024
Due to state budgetary constraints, plans to build a new landfill in Puerto Peñasco have been pushed to 2024, reports Puerto Peñasco mayor Jorge Pivac Carrillo. However, operation of a new holding cell, built at the current landfill earlier this year, will be fast-tracked. Use of the new cell had been on hold due to lack of adequate machinery to ensure appropriate final disposal of the city’s waste.
Puerto Peñasco’s current landfill has far surpassed its useful life and continues to represent several problems, including smoldering residue that has led to fires. With this in mind, the city has been taking steps for construction of a new landfill, which comes at a cost of 33.5 million pesos (about 1.9 million USD). As the municipality does not have funds to build a new landfill on its own, a project to do so now sits with the State Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development.
