Mysterious Stalls Removed from Malecon…again

The Technical Board of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT) agreed upon removal of 16 widely disputed modular stands from the malecón.  In following up on that decision, in his first days in office, incoming mayor Jorge Pivac gave instructions for their immediate removal.

The 16 malecon stands had sparked community debate and petitions requesting more project transparency and reconsideration. In response to the petitions in August, a union of street vendors blocked access to the malecon for a brief time as a way to express their support for the project.  These debates led to the stands’ temporary removal from the malecón in early August, only for them to be set up once more within the public area in early September.

Yet, the new directive for the immediate and definitive removal of the mysterious modules will mean modifications to the malecón rehab plan.

Mayor Pivac detailed, on Sept. 10th the 2021 Technical Finance SubCommittee had unanimously voted for removal of the malecón modules, as well as to address topics from progress reports on the Malecón Maintenance and Dignifying Project. The SubCommittee also agreed funds from the modules would be applied to new concepts within the proposed project.
