While in the southeastern part of Sonora the colonial town of Alamos gets ready to hold their 29th international cultural celebration known as the Alfonso Ortiz Tirade Festival (FAOT), our little corner of Sonora is preparing for music to sweep over the beaches from Wrecked to JJ’s with tunes of the 6th edition of January Jam.
This weekend
The now traditional trek to Puerto Peñasco’s beaches in January for the Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers faithful will kick off on Friday night at Wrecked with Roger teaming up with the Hickman Dalton gang for a night of good times, good humor, and good music (beginning at 8 p.m.). Tickets were sold ahead of time, and last year’s show sold out, though there may be a few stragglers at the door.
Jan Jam VI continues on Saturday, beginning with the 1st Moonshine Tequila golf Classic at 11 a.m. at The Links course of Las Palomas. The Mexican Moonshine Tequila Classic will be a best ball tournament. Those who signed up will be placed in groups of 4. Show up early and take advantage of the driving range. Moonshine Classic organizers say there is still room for a couple of walk-ons if you decide on Saturday that you want to golf.
Saturday night the Jam gets jamming around sunset (after 5ish) at JJ’s Cantina, first with the local “mariachi” voice of Hernán, followed with Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers under the night sky over the bay. Tickets $25 US
Major League baseball coaches are also coming to town this weekend to work with area youth on the finer points of catching, throwing, batting, fielding, etc. The clinic, organized in large part by the Youth Sports Foundation, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26th, at the city baseball stadium (yeah, where the Tiburones play) and as last year the public is invited to stop by.
So, you’re not part of the youth baseball leagues but still interested in the work of the Youth Sports Foundation? Join the coaches and others on Sunday, Jan.27th for the 2nd Annual YSF Golf Tournament to be held at Laguna del Mar. The scramble format gets underway at 9 a.m.
Don’t forget!

New films (Estrenos!) are usually up on Friday of each week and showtimes begin after 1 p.m. daily. Matinee pricing available on Sundays, plus look for special deals every Wednesday.
Pinacate! Winter hours for the Shuck Toak Visitors Center and Pinacate Biosphere Reserve entrance are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and recommendations are for morning visitors to stop by the Visitors Center first (with its newly installed museum pieces) and take in their interpretative trails and spectacular views over ancient lava flows. Then, continue along with a visit to the Pinacate craters (entry pass is valid for both spots). Cost $50 pesos visitors, $25 pesos Peñasco residents.
CEDO! Ecotours at the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans are back for 2013 with trips this weekend to the Pinacate plus a Sunday excursion to San Jorge (a.k.a. Bird Island). For more information see their monthly Ecotour schedule
