For the fifth consecutive year, Christmas melodies and a wide repertoire of music rang out during the Music Academy’s Christmas concert held Friday, December 5th at Hotel Peñasco del sol.
The evening began with a group of tin soldiers, or rather the Marching Band from Cet Mar #14, who rather than marching to a traditional Christmas melody opted to open the evening with Santana’s “Oye como Va”, followed up by lively renditions of “Negra Tomasa” and “Tequila.” The rock’n roll holiday concert continued as Ricardo Rivera led his guitar minstrels through “Bésame” and an array of riffs from Santana’s “Europa.”
From Santana to Santa, the Children’s and Youth Symphonic Orchestra finally took the stage following live Skype conversations with two of three former orchestra students who, through scholarships from the Music Academy, have taken their musical studies to Puebla and Guadalajara respectively. The third scholarship recipient is currently studying and performing opera in Ensenada, Baja California.
Students in the present Children’s and Youth Symphonic Orchestra range in ages from about 10 – 17, with many having begun to play just three months ago! Members of the Civil Association that supports the Music Academy expressed that for the first time in the Holiday Concert’s history, 100% of the students were from Puerto Peñasco. In past years, additional musicians had come to perform from cities such as Caborca and San Luis Rio Colorado.
The orchestra was led by Maestro Felipe de Jesús Matus Benítez who currently resides in Mexicali though has been influential in helping to assist the Academy in its development. Many of the songs were accompanied by the powerful voice of Martha Veronica Franco, who closed out the night with “Noche de Paz” (Silent Night).
During the event, six orchestra students who also take on the role as instructors for upcoming musicians, were recognized for their participation earlier this year in the “2013 Northwestern Regional Gathering of Children and Youth Orchestras and Bands” held in La Paz, Baja California.
Families and friends filled the Gran Salon at Peñasco del Sol for the concert, all of whom beamed with pride as the young musicians strummed, marched, fiddled, vibrattoed, and fluted their way into the season.
It is worth noting that in addition to serving as an end of the year recital, one goal of the Holiday concert was also to raise funds for continued scholarships for both children and youth interested in studying music, the purchase of new instruments and sheet music, as well as support for the three scholarship students currently pursuing musical paths in Guadalajara, Puebla, and Ensenada.

5ta Gran Velada Navideña de la Academia de Música de PP

5 Diciembre 2013.- Por quinto año consecutivo, alumnos de la Academia de Música de Puerto Peñasco ofrecieron una linda y emotiva Gran Velada Navideña, con el fin de celebrar estas fiestas decembrinas, así como presentar a sus padres y comunidad en general, los avances en sus estudios en la música.
Así, el Gran Salón de Hotel Peñasco del Sol, nuevamente recibió a cientos de personas que se dieron cita, los cuales disfrutaron de casi 120 minutos de un variado programa, iniciando con la valiosa participación de la Banda de Marcha del Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos del Mar (Cet Mar #14); así como la presentación de alumnos de guitarra, dirigidos por el Mtro. Ricardo Rivera. Finalmente, se disfrutó de melodías interpretadas por la Orquesta Sinfónica Infantil y Juvenil de la Academia de Música de Puerto Peñasco, dirigida por el Mtro. Felipe de Jesús Matus Benítez, quienes presentaron melodías mexicanas y navideñas, teniendo como invitada especial, a la voz de Verónica Franco.
Este emotivo evento, estuvo organizado por los integrantes de la Asociación Civil que respalda este proyecto cultural, encabezado por Don Gilberto Castillo Montiel, quienes en el marco de esta gran velada, entregaron a Luis Enrique Ochoa Corrales, José María Núñez González, Moisés Espinoza Sánchez, Andrés David Aguilar Valenzuela, Isaac Octavio Martínez Ponce y Sergio Leopoldo Burruel Otta su Constancia por asistir al “Encuentro Regional de Orquestas y Bandas Infantiles y Juveniles del Noroeste 2013”, organizado por la Secretaria de Educación Pública y Conaculta, el cual se realizó en la ciudad de La Paz, Baja California Sur, del 28 de Octubre al 1 de Noviembre.
“Es un honor para quienes integramos la Asociación Civil, ver el esfuerzo, empeño y trabajo de cada uno de estos niños y jovencitos que conforman la Orquesta Sinfónica, los felicitamos, así como a sus padres, pues trabajando en equipo podemos fortalecer el arte y la música en nuestra comunidad”, destaco Don Gilberto Castillo, al brindar un mensaje a los asistentes.
Vale la pena destacar, que este evento además de presentar el avanece de estudio de sus alumnos en la música, busca reunir fondos para ofrecer becas a niños y jovencitos deseosos de estudiar música, la adquisición de instrumentos y partituras, así como apoyo a tres alumnos que realizan sus estudios profesionales en las ciudades de Guadalajara, Puebla y Ensenada.
