For a second consecutive year, amateur golfers from the US and Mexico met upon the impeccable Peninsula de Cortes golf course at Mayan Palace just minutes to the southwest of Puerto Peñasco to challenge each other at the Uniting Nations Cup while promoting bonds of friendship between both countries. Last year, the US team claimed victory of the Cup so this year the Mexican team was filled with determination to ensure the Cup would come back home.
Friday, May 18th, 7:30 a.m….golfers began to arrive at the course. Many of them already friends who had come to participate in the Cup for a 2nd time; yet, there were many new faces, golfers from both countries who had decided to be part of the team for their respective nations. The Peninsula de Cortes golf course welcomed the golfers with three flags undulating in the wind above the practice range: the US flag, the Mexican flag, and the white flag of the Uniting Nations Cup. The excitement was palpable while the golfers posed under their flags; the Mexican team wore green while the US team donned blue for their first day on the course.
The wind made its presence known throughout the first round of competition and golfers faced a challenging day in pulling off their best shots. The first day’s format was “Four Ball”, in which teams made up of 2 Mexicans and 2 Americans played in pairs, each team playing their better-ball score. At the end of the rounds, golfers returned to the Clubhouse where Tournament Director, Vito Berlingeri, accompanied by Ed Gowan, Lorraine Thies, and Brian Foster of the Arizona Golf Association (AGA), added up the scores. To the wonder of many and delight of others, Mexico had come out victorious during the first day with a decisive score of 14 to 6.
The weather improved on the second day of play, with no wind blowing throughout the morning. The course looked magnificent and more beautiful than ever thanks to the tremendous work of course directors and staff; the entire Nicklaus design course was in perfect condition! With the spectacular fairways and greens as background, the Mexican team set out with their white shirts while the US team donned red as they took each other on once more, now under the format of Foursomes. The matches, already enveloped in the rich taste of competition, were gaining rhythm as players who had lost their match the day before were out for revenge and looking to gain a point back for their teams. The US team was down 6.5 points and had to launch efforts so as not to fall behind in the battle for points.
An exciting highlight from day 2 came when John Anderson from the US team made a hole-in-one on Hole #14, winning a new Dodge Avenger! Anderson works with the Antigua corporation as a national sales agent in the golf division; Antigua is a strong sponsor of the event and provided the golf shirts that players wore throughout the competition.
Following an embattled second day, the teams wrapped up and once again emotions filled the clubhouse while players awaited the day’s scorecard results. Mexico had come out on top once more over the US team with a score of 10.5 to 9.5 on Day 2!
Nevertheless, even following the first days with the Mexican team towering over their competition, no one team held the advantage as there were still 40 points up for grabs during the final round of individual matches. For the Mexican team, winning the first two days of competition filled them with enthusiasm to seek victory on Sunday during the final confrontation. On the other hand, US team players planned their strategy to make a comeback and keep the Cup in their hands; they had to beat their opponents by more than 25 points of the 40 up for play. The Mexican team only had to win at least 15 points to ensure the Cup would go to Mexico.
With emotions set on victory, on Sunday, May 20th, golfers warmed up as they prepared for the final duel; the Mexican team wore red with the US team in white. Moments before the shotgun start, the Mexican team gathered to define their game strategy and Team Captain Andrew Gilchrist (who is also the Director of the Peninsula de Cortés golf course) spoke to his players, concluding with an enthusiastic cheer of MEXICO that made the competition tremble though they also briefly met to make final adjustments and similarly let out a cheer of USA before heading out to the course.
Play, emotions, and the scenery led to both victory and defeat, though surrounded in utmost courtesy and friendship, which the Uniting Nations Cup was able to achieve in bringing together 80 golfers from both countries for a glorious weekend of golf. As they neared the final holes, some players had already ceded victory to their opponents through a friendly gesture, exchanging handshakes as they acknowledged the quality and competitive level of their rivals. Other Foursomes continued their battle for points through the final hole, while the thrill of victory or the woe of defeat could be seen upon players’ faces. Yet, the satisfaction of having fought and defended their team’s colors would surely be a wonderful takeaway for each and every participating golfer.
In adding up the final scorecards, the US team had indeed won the battle on the 3rd day with a score of 20.5 US with 19.5 for Mexico, yet Mexico had won the Cup with an all-around tournament score of 44 to 36. Andrew Gilchrist, Mexican team captain, upon receiving the Cup from Tournament Director Vito Berlingeri, jokingly exclaimed, “….in 2011 the US won the Cup, and now Mexico…surely next year there will be blood.”
Congratulations to all the organizers of the Uniting Nations Cup 2012 as well as to the sponsors, volunteers, golf course staff, Mayan Palace, as well as to all participating golfers from both nations for having demonstrated and brought to life the friendship that exists between these two countries.
México trae la Copa de Uniting Nations 2012 a casa!
Por segundo año consecutivo golfistas, tanto de los Estados Unidos como de México, se dieron cita en el impecable campo de Península de Cortés en el Mayan Palace al suroeste de la ciudad de Puerto Peñasco, para enfrentarse en el torneo Uniting Nations Cup y promover los enlaces de amistad entre las dos naciones.
El año pasado, el equipo de los Estados Unidos se logró llevar la copa y por lo tanto este año el equipo mexicano venía con ganas de asegurar que la copa regresara.
El viernes, 18 de mayo, a las 7:30 a.m. los jugadores empezaron a llegar al campo. Varios de ellos ya eran amigos conocidos que vinieron a participar por segunda ocasión, pero también había caras nuevas; golfistas de ambos países que decidieron venir a formar parte del equipo bajo sus respetivas naciones. El club de golf Península de Cortes recibió a los golfistas participantes con 3 banderas ondeando sobre el área de práctica: la de los Estados Unidos de América, la de México, y la de la Copa Uniting Nations. Se sentía la emoción mientras los golfistas posaron con sus colores distintivos bajo las banderas. Los mexicanos se vestían de verde y los estadounidenses de azul.
El viento se hizo presente durante el primer día de golf y los jugadores enfrentaron una jornada difícil para conseguir su mejor juego. El formato del día era “four ball”, en lo cual jugaron los equipos en parejas formadas por 2 mexicanos y 2 estadounidenses, cada pareja jugaba la mejor puntación de su equipo. Al terminar la ronda, los jugadores llegaron a la casa club y entregaron sus tarjetas al Director del Torneo, Vito Berlingeri, que estaba acompañado por Ed Gowan, Lorraine Thies y Brian Foster de la Asociación de Golf del Estado de Arizona (AGA).
Ante el asombro de todos, Mexico se puso a la delantera con una victoria rotunda el primer día con la puntación final de 14 a 6
En el segundo día el clima mejoró, y se inicio una mañana sin viento. El campo lucía esplendoroso y más hermoso que nunca gracias al gran trabajo de los encargados y trabajadores del campo. Todas sus áreas se encontraban en perfectas condiciones. En este escenario salieron los jugadores, este día los mexicanos vestidos de blanco y los americanos de rojo, a competir entre sí una vez más, ahora bajo el formato de “Foursomes” o mejor bola.
Los enfrentamientos ya traían mucho sabor a competencia y estaban agarrando un buen ritmo, ya que los jugadores que perdieron el primer día querían desquitarse y regresar un punto a sus equipos nacionales. Los estadounidenses se encontraban 6.5 puntos abajo y tenían que remontar para no quedarse atrás en la pelea por los puntos. Un momento muy emocionante del día fue cuando el golfista John Anderson del equipo de USA hizo un hoyo en uno, en el hoyo #14, y ganó un coche nuevo, un Dodge Avenger. Anderson trabaja para la compañía Antigua como gerente nacional de ventas, siendo que Antigua también fue uno de los patrocinadores fuertes del torneo ya que ellos hicieron las camisas que cada jugador portaba.
Después de un día muy agotador, los equipos terminaron y nuevamente hubo mucha emoción en la casa club al esperar las tarjetas con los resultados. México había vuelto a ganar el día y se impulso nuevamente al equipo americano con un marcador de 10.5 a 9.5 por la ronda.
Sin embargo, pasando los dos primeros días y con el equipo mexicano imponiéndose a su competencia, no existía ventaja para nadie dado que el último día se jugaban 40 puntos en enfrentamientos individuales. Para los mexicanos el ganar los 2 primeros días les daba el entusiasmo para buscar la victoria el domingo en la ronda final; por el lado americano los jugadores planteaban su estrategia para regresar y mantener la copa en sus manos, pues tenían que vencer a los mexicanos por más de 25 puntos de los 40 a jugarse. Por lo tanto los mexicanos solo tenían que ganar con por lo menos 15 puntos que les aseguraría la copa para México.
En este ambiente de emoción para buscar la victoria la mañana del domingo, 20 de mayo, todos los jugadores hicieron su sesión de calentamiento para estar listos para el duelo final. El equipo mexicano se vestía de rojo mientras los estadounidenses llevaban sus camisas blancas. En el momento previo a iniciar el “escopetazo” – banderazo de salida-, el equipo mexicano se reunió para definir su estrategia de juego y el director de la selección, Andrew Gilchrist (también director de Península de Cortes), dirigió unas palabras a sus jugadores, terminando con un fuerte grito de “¡MEXICO!” que hizo temblar a la competencia, quienes por su parte, también se reunieron brevemente para hacer los últimos ajustes y sacar un tronador grito de “USA!” para salir al campo.
Las jugadas, las emociones, y el escenario, dieron paso a victorias y derrotas que no dejaban de lado la cortesía y la amistad que nuevamente la Copa Uniting Nations logró al unir 80 golfistas de ambas naciones en un grandioso fin de semana de golf.
Acercándose a los últimos hoyos por jugar, algunos jugadores ya cedían la victoria a sus oponentes en un gesto amistoso, se daban la mano reconociendo la calidad y la competitividad de sus rivales. Otros “foursomes” siguieron peleando su punto hasta el hoyo final en donde la emoción de la victoria y el coraje de la derrota se veía en los rostros de los participantes. Entonces, la satisfacción de haber luchado por defender los colores de su equipo será un gran recuerdo para todos y cada uno de ellos.
Al ir calculando las últimas tarjetas de los jugadores, el equipo estadounidense siempre si había ganado la batalla del 3er día con la puntuación de 20.5 USA y México con 19.5, pero México había ganado la Copa con el marcador global de 44 a 36. Andrew Gilchrist del equipo mexicano, al recibir la Copa presentada por Vito Berlingeri, bromeaba “…en 2011 los Estados Unidos ganó la Copa, y ahora México…seguramente para el próximo año va a haber sangre…”
