Local Chess Club invites new Players

Thursday evenings in Rocky Point have some new moves, chess moves to be exact.  To promote an interest in chess among youth and adults alike, members of “Ajedrez en Puerto Peñasco” (Chess in Puerto Peñasco) invite people from across the community to join every Thursday night, with additional impromptu games in between.

Armando González, chess night organizer and tournament promoter for “Ajedrez en Puerto Peñasco” details games are held Thursdays, 6 pm – 9 pm presently at the “Erase una vez” event hall (address: Ave. Julian Bustamante / corner of Rio May – one block north of the Montessori school).  There is no cost, though participants are invited to bring their own chess board and timeclock if you have one.

While mostly adults attend the Thursday night chess tournaments, González adds they hope to move games to the Municipal Youth Institute or possibly the centrally located Casa de Cultura in the future. He adds, “You know, there’s a good level of chess here in Puerto Peñasco, though the spark hasn’t been maintained, so that is what we are trying to do”.
