With its spectacular arid landscapes, inviting ocean views, and intense desert light, Puerto Peñasco continues to carve out a corner in the world of film. This weekend, for the first time in Peñasco, the 3rd International Desert Film Fest (FICD) extends its reach to our port, offering FREE screenings Fri. (12th) and Sat. (13th) at the Municipal Auditorium, closing out Saturday night at CitiCinemas.
Children’s functions will open up each day of the Festival, Friday at 10 a.m., and Saturday at 11 a.m., with films showing throughout the afternoon and into the evening. The official inauguration of the two day fest, led by Peñasco mayor Prof. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, is on Friday evening (4/12), 7 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium (across from City Hall) though there are functions earlier in the day. Saturday, from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. there will also be a Jazz presentation as the Fest transitions from the auditorium over to CitiCinemas.
At a noon press conference on Wednesday, April 10th, invited guest and accomplished musician, screenwriter and author Armando Vega Gil (widely known in Mexico as part of the “guacarock” group Botellita de Jerez), sat between Jesús Romero Chagoyán, Director of Civic and Cultural Affairs, and Socorro González Barajas of sponsor Cine Club Primera Toma, as they highlighted the importance of these types of events for the area. It is worth noting while the majority of films at the Fest are in Spanish, the majority have English subtitles so everyone is invited. Remember, it’s FREE!
Along with the two days of film screenings, on Wednesday evening, Vega Gil, who is visiting Puerto Peñasco for the first time, launched into a 3-day intensive screenwriting workshop with a dozen eager writers and film fans. The workshop is part of the grander fest entitled “Images are formed through words”, which is simultaneously screening films across Sonora in Hermosillo and Empalme.

Festival Internacional de Cine en el Desierto 12 y 13 de abril
Con sus paisajes impresionantes, vistas del mar, y luz intensa, Puerto Peñasco continúa creando su presencia en el mundo del cine. Este fin de semana, y por primera vez en Puerto Peñasco, el 3er Festival Internacional de Cine en el Desierto (FICD) llega a nuestras playas, ofreciendo presentaciones de cine GRATUITAS los días viernes y sábado (12 y 13) en el Auditorio Municipal, así como unas cuantas funciones en CitiCinemas para cerrar evento.
Habrá funciones para niños los dos días del Festival, el viernes a las 10 a.m. y el sábado a las 11 a.m., y seguirán las muestras durante toda la tarde. La inauguración oficial del Festival se llevará a cabo el viernes, 12 de abril, a las 7 p.m. en las instalaciones del Auditorio Municipal presidido por el Presidente Municipal, Prof. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta. Además, de 5 p.m. a 6 p.m. el día sábado, 13 de abril, habrá una pequeña presentación de jazz durante la transición del festival a las salas de CitiCinemas.
Durante una conferencia de prensa el miércoles, 10 de abril, el invitado especial Armando Vega Gil, músico, guionista, escritor y sobretodo conocido como parte del grupo “guacarock” Botellita de Jerez, se presentó al lado de Jesús Romero Chagoyán, Director de Acción Cívica y Cultural, así como Socorro González Barajas del Cine Club Primera Toma, A.C. al hacer hincapié de la importancia de este tipo de evento en la región. ¡Recuerdan que no hay ningún costo para las funciones!
A parte de los dos días de cine, por la tarde del miércoles Vega Gil empezó un curso intensivo de guion dentro del marco del Festival, llamada “La imagen se forma de letras,” que se lleva a cabo simultáneamente en las ciudades de Hermosillo y Emplame. Una docena de cinéfilos y escritores llegaron a participar en el taller, lo cual durará tres días.
