The wind generator installed over recent months in the area of Sandy Beach finally began operations on January 8th. The equipment will generate wind based electricity, which will be reflected in electric bills for 10,500 families in Sonora, including 1500 families in Puerto Peñasco.
Federal Representative Antonio Astiazaran, accompanied by Deputy Energy Secretary Leonard Beltrán Rodríguez, Magaly Flores of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), and Puerto Peñasco Mayor Gerardo Figueroa together turned on the wind generator, which is the sole type of its kind in Mexico. The project includes a federal investment of 75 million pesos, and is aimed at benefiting families most in need within the 39 municipalities of Sonora’s Fourth district (south of Puerto Peñasco toward Guaymas).
“By doing this, we will achieve cleaner and less expensive energy, which is precisely the goal of “Sonora Energy.” This will provide 10,500 families with savings in their electric bills, all thanks to the strength of the wind,” noted Representative Astiazaran.
Following the launch of this first wind generator in Puerto Peñasco, a second generator is projected to help complete support in electricity savings for families benefiting from the program.
With this project Puerto Peñasco now becomes a “green municipality,” whose natural winds, sun, and tides may be taken advantage of in order to create clean energy.
