The city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV) held a meeting on Nov. 28th entitled “Perspectives and Challenges of Tourism in Puerto Peñasco,” with Sonoran Governor Guillermo Padrés Elías as the main guest of honor. Governor Padrés was accompanied by State Tourism Coordinator Javier Tapia Camou, Puerto Peñasco mayor Prof. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, Navy ship captain Jorge Augusto Escamillas Gonzáles, Miguel Ángel Guzmán Orozco of the local branch of the National Migration Institute (INM), and event host Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, Puerto Peñasco OCV President.
The meeting also included invited guests from various tourism developments from across the city, business representatives and those from a variety of civil associations including AMPI (Realtor association), CANIRAC (Restaurant Association) and the local Association of Architects, as well as business leaders from the private sector.
Vázquez del Mercado began the meeting with a presentation regarding tourism in the city that included 2012 statistics showing occupancy rates surpassed those of 2011 by 16%, noting the arrival of nearly 1.5 million visitors to the area in the year. He reaffirmed the summer was the highest tourism season, explaining this showed a 25% increase over last year’s numbers. In all, this means an economic influx of 74 million tourism dollars in the year, being one of the most important pushes for economic growth and the creation of jobs in the city.
During his presentation, the OCV President stressed the importance of improving the city’s connectivity as a challenge in strengthening overall tourism flow to boost key projects currently underway while guaranteeing the area’s economic growth. Thus, he underscored, the importance of widening and renovating the Puerto Peñasco – Caborca highway along the stretch from Peñasco to the “Mechudo” curve that currently connects with the Coastal Highway toward Puerto Libertad. This road is one of the principal ways of travel from Peñasco into the rest of the country, and a main road for national tourism to our port. He added the importance represented by the follow-up of the three levels of government in addressing the topic of expanding the Mexican Border Entry in Sonoyta for the comfort of American tourists visiting Peñasco.
As a final point of his presentation, and a priority matter for the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Vázquez del Mercado touched on the commercial flight that will soon provide aerial travel to the city, same which requires an operational fund of $500,000 USD. These funds, he explained, are to be made up of an initial contribution of $165,000 US that has been collected through area hotel developments and tourist resorts, civil associations (AMPI, Colegio de Arquitectos, CANIRAC, etc.) and business leaders from different areas of the city. Another part, that of $165,000 USD is to be provided by the Mayan Palace group, and a third part of $170,000 US is requested from the State Government as their participation through the Federal Tourism Office (COFETUR). The agreement with the airline is set to be signed this coming January, and flights will be available come February 2013, with connections from Puerto Peñasco to Hermosillo and Las Vegas, NV. Flights will run three times weekly.
Following this initial presentation, State Tourism Director Javier Tapia Camou discussed progress on the Home Port project. He noted this would be the first Home Port in all of Mexico and in its first phase is designed to receive a cruise ship measuring 300 meters in length, with room to extend this to a second dock with the same capacity in the future. This will also include a cruise-ship terminal. Tapia Camou emphasized steps for the project with respect to federal permits, as well as the participation of the recognized firm of Bermello Ajamil in the development of the pre-project. The project itself will have a cost of approximately 600 million pesos and work will take an estimated 2.5 years. This project will have a very important effect on the creation of jobs in the city throughout the period of construction. Tapia mentioned that currently there are ship companies interested in immediately programming their routes once construction begins. He similarly recognized the importance of the lands donated by the Brown Family, which are required for this project. This donation will make it possible for this project to become a reality, beginning as of the first quarter of 2013 when inauguration and launch of the project is programmed.
Reyel Taylor, president of tourism developers in the city, then spoke and commented on the importance represented by the participation and support of the state government in the growth of this destination. This is taking place through infrastructure projects that bit by bit will allow Puerto Peñasco to offer jobs that guarantee the quality of life of the community, as well as multiple opportunities to generations of young people who seek work in the city.
The Mayor, Prof. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, expressed appreciation for the Governor’s support of the city and the tremendous projects underway including the Convention Center and Home Port. He stressed the importance of growth within the tourism sector of the city as one of the principal sources of employment for the Puerto Peñasco community.
In closing out the forum, Governor Guillermo Padrés Elías spoke, visibly content with the statistics that show an increase in tourism during 2012. He recognized the efforts of investors, as well as of the local and State government, in promoting the area both nationally and abroad. He mentioned at this time the projects with the largest tourism investment in the state are currently being done in Puerto Peñasco, which has translated into a growth of approximately 7% in the local economy. He reiterated his support for Puerto Peñasco in seeing these projects, such as the city’s Convention Center, come to fruition. Furthermore, he expressed his full support for the administration of Mayor Gerardo Figueroa for the benefit of the community. The Governor made special mention of the Brown Family, recognizing the importance of their donation of lands required to carry out both the Convention Center as well as the Home Port. This led to warm applause from the crowd.
With respect to the Home Port, Padres Elías mentioned there has been tremendous work in getting the project to a federal level in order to get financing. He added they have made important progress with permits from the Secretary of Communications and Transport, as well as work with Congress and the Tax Secretary, explaining the Home Port now has an official file which makes it viable and ready for financing from the Federal Government in 2013. The Governor mentioned that part of the investment resources will also come from the neighboring states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sinaloa, who will also benefit economically from the launch of the “Sea of Cortes” route.
In an emotional statement, the Governor committed to provide the $170,000 US needed for the AeroMéxico commercial flight fund; this news was received with a round of applause by those attending the meeting. In addition, he emphasized, they are making a strong push to include the Puerto Peñasco – Caborca highway within the 2013 State Budget. With respect to the entry-point in Sonoyta, he expressed the State Government is about to close a contract for the purchase of land needed so that the project to widen the border entry point may be begun by the Federal Government. Finally, the Governor confirmed resources to begin the second phase of the city’s Convention Center, where he visited following the meeting in order to oversee progress on the job.
Undoubtedly, it was a meeting with excellent results for the city of Puerto Peñasco and the objectives of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in improving tourism infrastructure in our city.
Gobernador Padrés reitera su apoyo por Puerto Peñasco

En una reunión de trabajo denominada “Perspectivas y Retos del Turismo en Puerto Peñasco”, organizada por la Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes de Puerto Peñasco (OCV), asistió como invitado principal el Gobernador de Sonora Guillermo Padrés Elías, acompañado por el Coordinador de Turismo en el Estado, CP. Javier Tapia Camou; el Presidente Municipal de Puerto Peñasco, Prof. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, el Capitán de Navío del Sector Naval, Jorge Augusto Escamillas Gonzáles; Miguel Ángel Guzmán Orozco, representante del Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) y el anfitrión del evento, el Lic. Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, Presidente de la Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes de Puerto Peñasco. La reunión tuvo como invitados a diferentes desarrolladores turísticos de la ciudad, representantes de Cámaras de Comercio y Asociaciones Civiles, como AMPI, CANIRAC, el Colegio de Arquitectos, así como a empresarios de la iniciativa privada.
El Lic. Vázquez del Mercado inició la reunión con la presentación del ramo Turístico en la ciudad, con estadísticas del 2012, año en el que la ocupación superó al 2011 en un 16 %, para llegar a cerca de 1.5 millones de visitantes en el año. Se reafirmó que el verano fue la temporada con más afluencia, ya que este tuvo un incremento del 25% sobre cifras del año pasado. En cifras esto significó una derrama económica de 74 millones de dólares en el año; siendo ésta uno de los detonantes más importantes para el crecimiento económico y la generación de empleo en la ciudad. Además recalcó ante el Gobernador la importancia que representa mejorar la conectividad de la ciudad como uno de los retos que enfrentamos para mejorar la afluencia turística, y así detonar los proyectos clave que se están desarrollando en este momento y garantizar el crecimiento económico del destino. Para ello, subrayó al Gobernador, la importancia de la ampliación y renovación de la carretera Puerto Peñasco – Caborca en su tramo Peñasco a la curva del “Mechudo” donde actualmente se entronca la carretera costera hacia Puerto Libertad, ya que esta vía es una de las principales vías de comunicación entre la ciudad y el resto del país, y principal ruta del turismo nacional a este puerto. Agregó la importancia que representa el seguimiento que los tres niveles de Gobierno le deben dar al tema de la ampliación del Puerto Fronterizo Mexicano en Sonoyta, para comodidad de los turistas americanos que visitan el destino.
Finalizó su presentación el director de la OCV con un tema prioritario para la OCV; el tema del vuelo comercial que dará conectividad aérea a la ciudad, mismo que requiere un fondo de $500,000 dólares para su operación. Estos recursos, se explicó, será integrado por una aportación inicial de $165,000 dólares que ha sido reunida por empresarios hoteleros , desarrolladores turísticos, Asociaciones civiles (AMPI, Colegio de Arquitectos, CANIRAC, etc.) y empresarios de diversos ramos en la ciudad. Otra parte de $165,000 será aportada por el grupo Mayan Palace, y la tercera parte de $170,000 dólares se solicita como participación del Gobierno del Estado a través de la Coordinación Federal de Turismo (COFETUR). El convenio con la aerolínea será firmado en enero próximo, y los vuelos comenzarán a estar disponibles a partir de febrero 2013, con conexión a Hermosillo y Las Vegas Nevada, tres días a la semana.
En una segunda intervención, el contador y actual Director Estatal de Turismo Javier Tapia Camou, expuso los avances del proyecto para el Home Port, el cual será el primero en México, y esta diseñado en su primera etapa para atraer a un crucero de 300 metros de largo, con facilidades de extender a un segundo muelle de la misma capacidad a futuro. Así también incluirá el edificio terminal. Tapia Camou enfatizó los avances del proyecto en cuanto a los permisos federales así como la participación de la reconocida firma Bermello Ajamil en el desarrollo del anteproyecto de la obra, la cual tendrá un costo de aproximadamente $600 millones de pesos y tendrá una duración estimada en 2.5 años. Esta obra tendrá un efecto muy importante en la creación de empleos en la ciudad durante la construcción. Mencionó que actualmente existe el interés de las compañías navieras por programar inmediatamente sus recorridos en cuanto se arranque la construcción. Reconoció a su vez la importancia de la donación del terreno requerido para este proyecto por la familia Brown, lo cual ha hecho posible que este proyecto se esté volviendo una realidad, a partir del primer trimestre del 2013 cuando se programa la inauguración e inicio de la obra.
Reyel Taylor, presidente de los desarrolladores turísticos de la ciudad, tomó la palabra para comentar la importancia que representa la participación y apoyo del gobierno estatal para el crecimiento del destino. Esto se está dando a los proyectos de infraestructura que poco a poco permitirán en Puerto Peñasco ofrecer trabajos que garanticen la calidad de vida de los rocaportenses, así como múltiples oportunidades a las actuales y futuras generaciones de jóvenes que buscan empleo en la ciudad.
El alcalde Gerardo Figueroa agradeció el apoyo del gobernador a la ciudad y a los proyectos detonadores que se están llevando a cabo, como lo es el centro de convenciones y el Home Port; recalcó la importancia del crecimiento del sector turístico en la ciudad, como una de las principales fuentes de empleo para los rocaportenses.
Para cerrar este foro, tomó la palabra el gobernador del Estado de Sonora, Guillermo Padrés Elías, quien se mostró muy contento con las estadísticas que señalan un incremento en el turismo durante 2012; reconoció el esfuerzo por parte de los inversionistas, así como del gobierno local y del Estado, para llevar a cabo la promoción del destino en lo ámbito nacional, como también en el extranjero. Mencionó que en este momento los proyectos de inversión turística más grandes del Estado se están llevando a cabo en Puerto Peñasco, y que esto ha representado un crecimiento de alrededor 7% en la economía local, por lo que reiteró su apoyo a este puerto para llevar a la conclusión los proyectos como el centro de convenciones de la ciudad. Así mismo, declaró un apoyo total a la administración del alcalde Gerardo Figueroa, en beneficio de los rocaportenses. Hizo una mención especial a la familia Brown, para reconocerles la importancia de haber aportado en donación los terrenos requeridos para llevar a cabo tanto el centro de convenciones como el área del Home Port, lo cual levantó un cálido aplauso por parte de los asistentes.
En cuanto al Home Port, Padrés Elías mencionó que se ha venido realizando bastante trabajo para poner el proyecto a nivel federal en la antesala de ser financiado; agregó que se han realizado grandes avances con los permisos de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes para ello, así como mucho trabajo en el Congreso de la Unión y la Secretaria de Hacienda, de la cual dijo, el proyecto de Home Port ya tiene expediente oficial, lo que lo hace viable y listo para ser financiado por el Gobierno Federal en el 2013. El Gobernador mencionó que parte de los recursos de la inversión también vendrán de estados vecinos incluyendo a Baja California, Baja California Sur y a Sinaloa, quienes tendrán un beneficio económico al detonar la ruta naviera “Del Mar de Cortes”.
En emotiva declaración, el Gobernador se comprometió a aportar los $ 170,000 dólares necesarios para el fondo del vuelo comercial con Aeroméxico, lo cual fue recibido con gran aplauso también por parte de los asistentes. Además enfatizó que se esta haciendo un gran esfuerzo para incluir la carretera de Puerto Peñasco- Caborca en el presupuesto 2013 del Gobierno del Estado; en cuanto al tema de la garita en Sonoyta, expresó que el Gobierno del Estado está por cerrar trato con la compra del terreno necesario para que el proyecto de ampliación del puerto fronterizo se inicie por parte del Gobierno Federal. Por último, el Gobernador confirmó los recursos para iniciar la segunda etapa del Centro de Convenciones de la ciudad, al cual se dirigió después de esta reunión, para supervisar el avance de en la construcción de este.
Sin duda alguna, fue una reunión con excelentes resultados para la ciudad de Puerto Peñasco, cumpliendo los objetivos de la Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes para mejorar la infraestructura turística de nuestro destino.
