The folklore of Puerto Peñasco includes stories of Al Capone visiting the area in the late 1920s, during U.S. prohibition. As legends go, Capone reportedly would stay at the “Marine Club”, or rather what is now known as Posada La Roca in the Old Port. La Roca, therefore, is the perfect spot for the Capone Casino Charity Night on Saturday, Jan. 28th, with proceeds going to student scholarship programs of the Municipal DIF.
The Al Capone Festival January 28th, which is set to start around 7 p.m., will pay homage to the lure and lore of Capone in Rocky Point with casino games set up just outside the inviting stone façade, an exhibition of antique cars, a photo and art exhibit within the cozy confines of La Roca recalling the early years of Rocky Point, tours through the historic hotel, as well as a photo booth with Capone era pieces for attendees to snap a pic to smuggle out a memory or two from the event. (Actually, don’t plan on smuggling out your smiling mug as this is a fundraiser after all).
All are encouraged to dress up in the best time appropriate pieces and be ready to purchase game pieces before hitting the tables. At the end of the evening, after raking in your winnings, game pieces can be used to “buy” items or services donated to the event by local sponsors. Mike LaBarge from American Legion MX Post 15 will be helping out with Bingo, while Jim Ringquist of Sonoran Resorts annual Charity Casino Night fame is lined up to help out with Black Jack, Roulette, etc.
So grab a flapper dress, fedora, overcoat, and cigar and plan to head to Puerto Peñasco’s historic La Roca hotel in the Old Port for a dab of Rocky Point legend.
