Cananea mine spill causes water alert around Río Sonora

After two weeks following a chemical metal spill from mining operations in Cananea, Sonora, nearly 20 million liters of water have been distributed by the State Government in municipalities surrounding Río Sonora.

On instructions of Sonora Governor Guillermo Padrés, state officials continue to make daily visits to the municipalities of Aconchi, Arizpe, Banámichi, Baviácora, Huépac, San Felipe de Jesús and Ures, taking water, water tanks, dry goods and economic help.

The chemical spill from the mine in Cananea has halted the region’s economy, the supply of drinking water, as well as return to classes for the 2014-2015 school year.
