Black Carl is an indie, funk rock band from Tempe, Arizona. They describe themselves as playing a mix of funk, blues, and soul along with “All that was once good in music!”

Black Carl is made up of longtime friends, and has been together since 2007 when John Krause, who has played with other bands, decided to form a new group influenced by the ’60s soul he’d grown to love. He invited drummer Chad Leonard and Emma Pew over to hear some tracks and Black Carl was born, soon joined by a few additional musicians.

When you first hear their funk-soul, you will immediately sense the R&B influences of the greats: Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. The band names several other influences, including Motown, James Brown, The Meters, Stevie Wonder and (why not) throw in the Beatles, too.

However, the members of the Tempe group don’t exactly look like their influences. Guitarist John Krause says that after listening to their music, particularly Emma Pew’s vocals, people are often surprised to see the band. John explains, “I think it’s a common surprise that it’s a bunch of goofy young white kids.”

Their eclectic humor is easily seen on MySpace where they describe themselves as:

John Krause: drums, guitar, vox, all kinds of randomness. Ian Woodward: bass, guitar, and general suaveness. Chad Leonard: beatbox, drums, guitar, and sexiness. Matthew Noakes: dirty tambo, guitars, general hipness. The beautiful Emma Pew: Vox, ivories, goodies, and you wish you had her “ness.”

Remember: The band will be playing at JJ”s Cantina in Cholla Bay here in Rocky Point on October 12th. The show starts at 8 pm and there is just a $5 charge at the door. They will be sharing the stage with Jason Boots who will open the show.  Don’t miss a fun evening and great music.

(Boletos a solo $5 US).
