Though Puerto Peñasco is in its “off peak” time, the local office of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT) is planning strategies to increase beach cleaning efforts over the traditional Spring Break period. However, the office’s work is ongoing and removal of trash from area beaches currently rakes in about 1 ton weekly, reports local ZOFEMAT Director César García González.
The ZOFEMAT director noted his office, with support from different tourism service providers, has strengthened clean-up efforts in removing any waste from the coastline. This work helps to ensure compliance with the Mexican Norm for Sustainable Beaches, and moreover with the end goal of maintaining the city’s Clean Beach certification, first achieved in 2017.
