Altars at Sea for Day of the Dead

The “Altars at Sea” event organized by Audiorama, scheduled for Nov. 1st and 2nd at the boat launching point “la bajada” on the way to Old Port, aims to honor traditional customs and the deceased.

This will be the first time a celebration of this kind will be held, which can be seen more frequently in southern parts of the country.  The community, which will include the participation of fishermen, schools, organizations and other sectors, will design altars atop pangas alluding to pre-hispanic Mexican traditions, based on themes of various ethnic groups from across the country.

The Day of the Dead event will also provide a space for altars, which will be set up on Nov. 1st in the area of the former Bacanora restaurant and Terramar offices. These will remain on display throughout the day of Nov. 2nd.

Veruzca Flores, Manager of AudioRama Puerto Peñasco, details on Nov. 1st there will be a mass at 3 p.m., held in the area of the “la bajada” at the Capilla de la Virgen. The “Fiesta de la Cultura” is set to begin shortly thereafter and will include regional folkloric dance as well as folkloric dance from across the country, including that of “Los Chinelos” and the Deer Dance.

There will also be culinary tastes representing the diverse ethnic groups from the central and southern parts of the country that live in Puerto Peñasco.

It’s worth noting the street right near the docks will be closed to traffic from Calle 3 to just past the restaurants so that attendees can move about freely.

Families, residents, visitors, …everyone is invited to attend!  In addition, as part of the event participants are encouraged to dress as catrinas or catrins.
