This week, as part of events surrounding the 5th anniversary of the tragic daycare fire in Hermosillo, Sonora, the documentary ABC Nunca Más (ABC Never Again) by director Pedro Ultreras will be shown in Puerto Peñsco during a series of free screenings open to the public on June 3rd and 4th (Spanish with English subtitles).
The ABC daycare fire in Hermosillo, Sonora on June 5, 2009 is a moment that most people across Mexico, and with ties to Mexico, can remember where they were or what they were doing when they first heard the news. The daycare fire itself, in which 49 children died and nearly 100 were injured, has come to be known as the largest infant tragedy in Mexico.
In late 2012, ABC Nunca Más premiered at the Manhattan Film Festival in New York City, retelling the stories of families directly affected by the daycare fire and their struggles for justice while holding on to hope and the desire for more children. The documentary reached theaters across Mexico in late May of 2013 just in time for the 4th anniversary of the ABC fire. In addition to running for weeks in Hermosillo’s theaters itself, ABC Nunca Más touched thousands of people and was even shown in Mexico City’s main Zócalo. Now, on ABC’s 5th anniversary, the film is once again being shown in different venues across Mexico, including Puerto Peñasco.
Along with two screenings at local universities, which are open to students and the general public, there will be an open air screening on Tuesday evening, June 3rd on the patio at Café Puerto Viejo as part of the local Cine Club Primera Toma’s (First Take Film Club) CineMartes series. The public is invited to attend any of these free screenings, and encouraged to bring a chair to Tuesday evening’s presentation as plans are to have a section of Calle Zaragoza (between the malecón and the church) closed to allow for additional seating space as needed.
A special presentation of the documentary is also scheduled to take place at CitiCinemas at noon on June 4th with invited guests from the local DIF, City Hall, area schools, safety and protection offices, and the Red Cross.
