Indigenous People’s Gathering to be held August 9th in Puerto Peñasco
With the goal of promoting Tohono O’odham culture and traditions, and that of other ethnic groups within Puerto Peñasco, the city will host its first Celebration of Indigenous Peoples on August 9th at the Expo Convention Center.
The celebration, organized by the Commission on Ethnic Affairs, will include various activities including an exhibition, the creation and sale of folk art, as well as traditional food, along with traditional music, dances, and rituals.
City councilman and president of the Commission on Ethnic Affairs, Gerardo Pasos Valdez, detailed plans are already well underway for the August 9th event, selected to coincide with World Indigenous Peoples Day. Pasos Valdez emphasized the goal is to position this event as a traditional gathering to acknowledge and preserve the diverse ethnic cultures within Puerto Peñasco. This includes the Tohono O’odham as well as ethnic groups from other states, encompassing Mixteco and Zapoteco cultures among others.
“Through this event we aim to share our cultures and traditions with everyone in Puerto Peñasco, as well as visitors so they can learn more about the ethnic groups settled in this area, and of course more about the native ethnic group,” stressed Pasos Valdez.
