Puerto Peñasco part of “Toca Puertas” program in Arizona to bolster sister cities

Steps and virtues to attract more tourism to Puerto Peñasco were highlighted during the city’s presentation at the “Toca Puertas” (Knocking on Doors) program held last week in Phoenix, AZ.  The event, promoted by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism, also provided a venue to formalize several sister city agreements for cities across Arizona with their Mexican counterparts, highlighting the solidarity between the two countries and principally that of Sonora and Arizona.

With Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués on hand, along with Arizona government officials including Governor Katie Hobbs, Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño stressed the existing bond between Sonora and Arizona strengthens tourism offerings in both states. He added this transforms this macro-region into an exceptional international tourist destination.

Among these benefits, Governor Durazo underscored the possibility of linking Arizona with this year’s upcoming Grand Desert Race October 14th – 15th in Puerto Peñasco, which seeks to boost the regional economy.  Other projects include building a Sentri lane at the Sonoyta/Lukeville border crossing, as well as a four-lane highway from Arizona to Puerto Peñasco that would facilitate easier towing of yachts to the Sea of Cortez.

On behalf of Puerto Peñasco, Municipal Tourism Director Nidia Rivera noted that Puerto Peñasco is currently experiencing one of its best moments as host to important international caliber tourist and athletic events.  She also highlighted the recent groundbreaking on construction of the Sonoran Star Resort, which will consist of five 20-floor towers and certainly further boost the economy and tourism. Rivera also emphasized the fact that Puerto Peñasco is home to the only 3 certified clean beaches in Sonora, one of which is the longest stretch of certified clean beach in Mexico.

Rivera noted Puerto Peñasco will also host the First National and International Tourism and Real Estate Forum on September 29th, bringing together real estate sectors from California, Arizona, Baja California, and Sonora.   “We invite you to Puerto Peñasco, your beach, Arizona’s beach, a safe destination for the entire family,” stressed the Municipal Tourism Director.
