RCPM: January Jam

A weekend with RCPM in Rocky Point Part I

silver-small-413x620 RCPM: January JamRoger Clyne describes his Mexican Moonshine tequila, Reposado and now Silver, as having a “glow”, a term used by aficionados of the agave nectar. Yet, it is more than clear that the Mexican Moonshine glow expands beyond the carefully crafted bottles (perfect size for attaching a CD below) and spreads across the pulsating atmosphere of the “faithful” who twice a year make their way to Rocky Point to hear Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (for January Jam in..well..January…and Circus Mexicus in June). Roger-Clyne-230-620x413 RCPM: January JamI too recently got swept up in the whole RCPM and Moonshine experience and joined the masses at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay for January Jam V on Jan. 28th, after not being able to make it to Roger’s first solo show (in Rocky Point) at Wrecked @ the Reef the night before.

Following the opening tunes of Jason Boots, the up-close-and-personal January Jam, shared with about 1,000 other people filling the multi-level spots of JJ’s Cantina along with groups gathered on the stony beach out front huddled around bonfires, began with “Mexico” from the band’s The Refreshments days …or as better understood “…here comes another song about Mexicooooo… I just can’t help myself….”  Donning straw cowboy hats, sombreros, and serapes, while toting cervezas as well as tequila, the RCPM faithful picked up easily when suddenly Roger’s “mic” took a siesta early on in the show. Roger and the band kept the contagious guitar strumming rock going while the sound was being fixed and the crowd obliged by filling the air with RCPM’s lyrics.

As I watched some in the crowd fold up and launch paper airplanes, all in line with the song “Paper Airplanes” off RCPM’s new album Unida Cantina, I recalled Roger saying during an interview earlier that day that over the years people are now hearing the music off their albums sooner (through social networking, etc.) and he is always pleased to know his fans are ready to sing along at any time. With the “mic” back up to par, Roger and the Peacemakers kept the music flowing through the beautiful serenade of “Marie” (also off Unida Cantina) and back to the “classics” from the first RCPM album Honky Tonk Union such as “Tell your Momma” and then of course there was “Mexican Moonshine…..Mexican Moooo-ooonshine”.  I’ll get some of these lyrics down before Roger comes back to town with the Peacemakers on June 9, 2012 for Circus Mexicus XXI! (…to be continued…)
