GUMA Gym trains boxing champions!

We recently spoke with our friend Alberto Gutiérrez, better known as “GUMA”, who in addition to his work with photography is an ultralight pilot and tremendous boxing fan. Guma learned to box from his father during his youth and boxed at an amateur level. In Tapachula, Chiapas he rose to the rank of “Golden Gloves,” though an injury to his jaw hindered his debut as a professional at 19.

Equipped at a very simple facility, Guma currently trains a group of 20 children, made up of young boys, girls, and teenagers.

From among his aspiring champions, Guma’s gym sent 5 boxers who had been selected from Puerto Peñasco to the most recent State tournament where they achieved 2 State Championships, in the 50 kg “cadet” (light flyweight) and Older Youth 60 kg (lightweight) categories.

Guma’s next boxing commitment is a pre-national tournament, set to take place in Tijuana on February 26th and he’s presently seeking sponsors to help make it possible to get the boys to the competition givenGym-Guma-2-630x419 GUMA Gym trains boxing champions! the gym does not receive funds from any official institution. Funds raised will be used for travel and equipment expenses for the 2 competitors, who if victorious will have the opportunity to attend the National Tournament in Monterrey, Nuevo León.

In this way, this local trainer and boxing fan is furthering his passion for the sport by planting a seed within the community’s children to encourage values of dedication, discipline, and training. This will undoubtedly one day make them champions in life!
