The 2nd Rocky Point Charanga (Soap box) Derby is nearing, with promises of curves, ramps, and even more fun!
The Charanga Derby, organized by the board of directors from the José Dávalos “Casa Hogar” Home for the Elderly, for a second year in a row will raise funds for the home and this year promises to be even more fun with challenges for participants.
The event is planned for Saturday, April 29th beginning just after 3 p.m. on the hill located on Calle Campeche when heading to the Mirador. There, dozens of participants and supporters will gather to cheer on the cars. Currently, 10 charanga cars are already registered, and registration is still open (500 pesos per car).
The charangas (or soap box cars) cannot have a motor or pedals, and must be pushed by a team of four (plus the pilot) down the hill in the Mirador in a race against time while facing challenges such as curves as well as a ramp. Plus, the track is expected to be longer this year so teams may have to push their charanga across the finish line!
The afternoon, which will begin with a Charanga Car Show exhibiting the competitors, will also include awarding of prizes to the first 4 spots.
There’s still time to get your charanga into the race, including a registration spot on
Tuesdays at Shrimp Plaza from 4 – 6 pm, Saturdays from 10 am – 12 pm, plus you can register at the offices of RockyPoint360 (Plaza Pelicanos 2nd floor), or by phone: 638 384 6166. You can call the offices of RockyPoint360 for info and registration (English) 383 1804 or info@rockypoint360.com
