Just over 300 fire department members from across Sonora are participating in the 10th Convention of Sonoran Firefighters, “Commander Héctor Rivera Sanchez”, which got underway in Puerto Peñasco on Friday morning, June 13th. The convention takes place along with the 40th anniversary of the founding of Puerto Peñasco’s own Fire Department.
Puerto Peñasco Fire Department Director and Director of Municipal Civil Protection Nicandro Cornejo Torres expressed, “Today we have reached 40 years since the founding of our fire department. It’s easy to say 40 years, though these represent 40 years of tremendous commitment to grow while becoming more professional in offering quality emergency services, both to the community as well as visitors, and with the ongoing commitment to continued improvement.”
The ceremony also included the presentation of recognition plaques to Héctor Rivera Sánchez as the first Commander of Puerto Peñasco’s Fire Department, along with a recognition plaque for Engineer Adolfo Quiroz Jaquez for 35 years of service in the neighboring community of Sonoyta.
During his welcome message, Nicandro Cornejo also recalled firefighters who have passed away, and for whom the civil and military authorities, along with the more than 300 convention participants, held a moment of silence.
City Secretary Oscar Villavicencio Lübbert, present on behalf of Mayor Figueroa Zazueta, inaugurated the State Convention by publicly recognizing the daily labor of men and women in the fire department who share the sole goal of protecting the community.
