Last weekend, The Links course at Las Palomas celebrated its 9th anniversary with its traditional golf tournament. This year, 95 players joined the club to participate in the competition which, in addition to providing trophies to winners in different categories, has always offered numerous attractive cash prizes for closest to the pin, ranging from $3000 to up to $7000 USD, plus Hole in One prizes of up to $25,000 USD!
The event began with a welcome cocktail party last Friday evening, with the added surprise of singer Nicho Hinojosa who performed a personal concert for guests. Everyone enjoyed the evening, along with the courtesy drinks, accompanied by friends and family in a very much “Las Palomas style” ambiance.
The first round began on Saturday, June 20th, with a second round on Sunday, June 21st. Overall the tournament took place under a mood of friendship and celebration, as for the golfing community from the northern part of Mexico as well as for participants from Arizona, Puerto Peñasco is a destination for golf, relaxation and to enjoy the beautiful days. Despite some wind, which demanded a bit more out of golfers looking for a lucky break to make their way to the prizes, the weekend was filled with thrills and good golf. There was also general concern about the condition of the course, yet through the diligent efforts of The Links staff and particularly maintenance that have brought this course back following a dry spell last year, it was in quite good conditions for play. In fact, I’d dare to say that the greens are in better condition than in the past 9 years of the course’s operations.
After their respective rounds, golfers enjoyed an excellent buffet style luncheon presented by Citrón restaurant of Las Palomas, which on the first day offered up seaside delights to treat golfers to the best of Puerto Peñasco : aguachiles with shrimp and scallop, along with finger licking good grilled grouper.
To close out the event, along with another delicious buffet for golfers and their families, the awards ceremony recognized winners for closest to the pin as well as in each individual category. It was a lively atmosphere, where excitement and camaraderie were common denominators during the closing ceremony. Everyone was of course invited to come back and play at next year’s 10th Anniversary tournament, which will surely be interesting!
